Usually i go for medium mechs first. Mainly because they are mostly glasscannons. If i see a srmcat those become first priority.

Go after the Mechs in such a way that they cannot return fire, therefore reducing their rate of attrition against us. Press LRM missile boats, punish SRM/Streak types from range etc....it's more about loadout and capability than weight class.

For me... The bigger the prize the funner the kill. I hunt Assaults and Heavies first. Mostly cause I'm in an Atlas. But when I am not solo hunting I shoot what ever the team calls out!

Shouldn't there be a "Garth" option in the poll?

Healers first, obviously. You're all clearly noobs.

How many times do you have to be told, Healers first, and protect our healers too!

But like so many good answers, it wasn't on this poll.

you want to get rid of high damage/low armor units first. That means mediums or some heavies. Then move to assaults, then finish lights.

The thread title just gave me an idea. Maybe the Command Console could be used to allow a Commander to designate specific targets as primary on everyone's HUD? That'd be pretty cool.

would be really fun to play whack a mole as those targets disappear and reappear and you have to reset the commands.

If you are talking about focus fire then I'd say assaults. I pug exclusively so I run around in a circle and shoot at the ground.

Instead of bringing up the whole battle map you just hit a key and it locks it, and keeps it locked until your pick a different target to prioritize.

Still, not worth taking a 3 ton computer in an ECM environment but it'd be cool if the thing did something.

Depends what I am running and what my team is running. I usually run with a 4 man and many times we will run 2 lights. If that is the case we have the light pilots hunt and kill the other light mechs and have the heavy/assaults focusing on other heavy/assaults.

SRM6 Cat
AC20 Cat
Gauss Kitten

Targets of opportunity, generally whoever happens to be standing in the line of fire of me and my teammates. Once you've eliminated the guys who can two shot your atlas, it's usually better to shoot the guy who is available, rather than thinking too much about the optimal target.

First one should focus fire the enemies that are out of position. If there are no enemies out of position, the focus should be on the biggest threat - focus down brawler builds before they can close range, or ECM builds if your team is LRM heavy, move on from there.

Impossible to say, but overall the Assault class battlemechs are the most long-lived one-on-one. They carry the heaviest weapons. They have the most armor.

That said, there's an argument to be made for each class, even each chassis. Then we must consider the modifications. What's a specific mech carrying? If that's a 3L Raven with ECM AND a couple LL's, it's probably a bit of a priority. Especially if the assaults/heavies are all trial mechs.

This is mostly a decision best made by a god commander on the ground as the situation develops. As it becomes clear which mechs are doing the most effective job of fighting his team, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of his team, the commander must make the decision where to focus fire--where the priority is.

Since this is an FPS I will go with a typical real life gun fight strategy. The closest target attacking you should be a priority. When you are not being attacked you should be focus firing what others are firing on.

Like everyone else has said, it's very situational. It's also dependent on what mech you're driving and your role. As I typically drive lights, my target priority is ECM Lights > Lights > Everyone else. I think that Heavy/Assault mechs generally shouldn't be taking anything other than shots of opportunity at lights, and instead focus on the heavier mechs on the opposing side.
