Camo Specs is a new feature added to MWO with the latest patch (Nov 27th, 2012) that gives players the ability to customize the paint jobs on their mechs. This new system can be a bit confusing and, from my experience, is a little inconsistent with certain things.

In an effort to alleviate confusion, I've created this thread to be a guide for all of us to use to learn how to best utilize the new Camo Spec system. I am not claiming to be an expert on this subject and my information may not be accurate. Please feel free to correct or confirm any of the information I have in this post.

Before you continue, I urge anyone who is having trouble using the system to first read PGI's "official" statement on Camo Spec before they come asking questions here. There's a good chance your question has already been answered here:

Basic Info not covered (or clearly explained) in the official post:
As mentioned, some paints cost C-Bills, others cost MC. If you paid MC or C-bills (or both) to customize the paint on your mech, this only lasts until you go in and change your paint again.

Example: I chose White, Orange, and Purple as my colors and pay the required C-bills and MC cost. The next day I go and change that same mech to Tan, Brown, and Green. I then pay the required C-bills or MC for the new pattern and my old pattern is erased. If I want to put the old pattern back on, it will cost me the same amount of C-bills/MC as it did originally. The only exception to this is for the Default, Founders, and PC Gamer patterns. These can be applied at anytime without incurring cost. However, it will clear your existing camo pattern and you will be required to repay C-bills/MC to reapply camo colors again.

At present, each color or camo pattern you purchase is only for use on that single variant of the mech and not other mechs or variants of that mech. So, if you want to have three Atlas variants painted white, you would need to buy that color for each variant.

I am uncertain how Patterns work. Are they a one-time use, or reusable? Can anyone who has purchased a pattern please fill me (us) in on the specifics of how you are allowed to use them?

Patterns are not reusable. If you select a different pattern you need to purchase it again.

This excludes the PC gamer skin which is "unlocked" on your account instead of purchased.

Quirks, Tips & Tricks:
The default Founders camo pattern can be modified, but in a much more restricted way than the standard default camo patterns. I'm basing this off my Founders CAT-C1 and I have not yet confirmed this to be true for the Founder's Jenner, Hunchback, and Atlas. It appears that only 1 of the three color options is replaceable, instead of all three colors like with the default camo patterns.

The Yen Low Wang's default color pallet is non-customizable. (My friend provided me with this info, I need others to confirm it.)

Those with the PC Gamer skin can use that skin's color palette on any battlemech, free of charge. Those colors are Black, Red, and a medium Gray and can be found under the "PC Gamer" category within the Color Filter window. From my experience, there is no C-bill or MC charge to use these three colors, and you can use these colors on any mech you want as often as you want. Even mechs that cannot typically use the PC Gamer skin, like the Cataphract, can use the three colors from the palette. Unfortunately, the Founders palette does not work in the same way as the PC Gamer skin. It is unknown whether the PC Gamer palette is working as intended, or if it's a bug that will be corrected at a later date.

Update: See Budor's post that shows what happens if you use the PC Gamer skin's palette. It's a bit confusing, but he's posted images as an example.

I'm looking for corrections on my information and more useful tips, tricks, or quirks people have found. So, if you have anything useful, please feel free to share with us.

The colors used on the default pc gamer skin are not the same that are available for free under the pc gamer dropdown. If you overrite your default pc gamer skin it will cost you 500MC to restore it.

The colors on the default pattern are (from left to right) PHRAKEN RED(125mc), GREY(125mc) and BLACK(250mc)

You can use the free colors found under the pc gamer dropdown but these will not make your skin look like it did before you changed it (default).

I will have to confirm this later (I'm at work atm). I could swear I switched between my PC Gamer skin and manually messing with those three colors without a fee.

@ALL: The PC Gamer Pattern is Separate from the colors but it will not Disappear. The Pattern is able to be color Customized So you can use different colors. Now here's where it gets good, The 3 Colors used for the PC Gamer Pattern are FREE of Charge to use on any Mech you own and they can be applied to ANY Pattern for FREE Too!!!!!!

Using any of the 3 pc gamer pack colours is free(including using those colours on a different pattern) (bug: if you have 0mc you can't use the pc gamer colours)

If you change the colour channels on your pc gamer skin, it changes to a different shade than the default pc gamer skin.(also a bug)

Giving out a pitch black, a vivid red and a bright grey for free wouldnt be the wisest business move. I doubt this is a bug.

Still cool we can actually customize the skin (pc gamer) and got 3 colours for free. Id rather take this than an option to reset to the "original" pc gamer colors. This is not a rant, just a warning for people that actually like the "original" pc gamer skins colour palette.

Edit: If you are still in doubt: Launch mechlab > choose mech you can apply the default pc gamer skin to > go to camo spec > apply pc gamer skin > save > go to camo spec > apply phraken red, gray and black > see nothing change > press reset > see nothing change > do not post anymore.

I dont think it is. I think they would rather sell you the vibrant ones and give you the dull ones.

If that was the case then the PC Gamer Default would also be in dull colors. :D

This is not fair in my opinion. When you purchase with MC (especially MC) it should remain in your mech's stable permanently even if you buy another pattern or color. I can see it not being the case with CB purchased items, but MC???? When you pay real $$ for something in this game it shouldn't be able to go away like that.
