Small Arms Hardpoints?

Now this might seem to be a suggestion specifically to nerf the Catapults running around with AC/20 and Gauss rifles, but my original motivation for the suggestion is because my mind goes for a loop when Mechs are spitting AC/20 shells out of machine guns. Aesthetically, I just dislike it.

However, from a game design point of view, do you think machine guns and flamers should have their own hardpoints? Yes it'll weaken the K2*, but it would also cut down the hilarious 9 flamer troll builds. Also, this might allow specific Mechs to suddenly fulfill specialist roles if MGs and flamers are buffed accordingly. Now with flamers not being available to any Mech with an energy hardpoint (which is every single Mech bar the Catapult A1), they might be allowed to actually heat up enemy Mechs. Suddenly, the Cicada 3C has a reason to exist; as a firestarter Mech or a specialist crit hunter. What do you say?

*But the K2 still has viable builds even if you aren't intent on stuffing Gauss Rifles and AC/20s into its undersized torso.

this. DOWN WITH THE K2! But on a side note. ballistic = machine gun energy=flamer


and cicada 3C is not under powered

dual Gauss cicada owns!

Yes, but now machine guns and flamers would have their own weapon grouping. They're considered small arms weapons, like what happened in MechCommander 2.

Didn't some previous games do something where each hardpoint had a specific amount of slots dedicated to it?

Not sure how to explain it.

I like it, but technically, I think they could do better. For instance, Hardpoints could have "sizes" to them, which allows any weapon of "that size or smaller" to fit in the hole. the MG port of the Cat could be "sized" for up to AC/2 for instance, by hardpoint.

So the first restriction is hardpoint, then the limit of the power of a weapon in that slot is by size.

change MGs to MG arrays with 3-4 machineguns, add damage to flamers and give them the ability to cause ammo explosions through armor if the players "heats up" an area that has ammo in it for a certain amount of time.

but having MGs and Flamers unbound to spam them would be hilarious.

It would be far better if each hardpoint had a weight limit to it, as has been suggested many times before.
Like Hardpoint Ballistic 20, Ballistic 1. Energy 7, Energy 1, Missil 10, Missil 1,5 for example
That way we would get rid of the owerpowered small mechs and Cat Heavy Weapons x2 builds.
A very easy and good solution.

This is something the MW Tactic has also and it bring the mechs back into line for what they where build.

In general, though, what attracts many new players (players unfamiliar with the TT, for instance, and definitely including me) is the sheer customization available to them. Genuinely overpowered builds shoud be nerfed, don't get me wrong, but builds that are merely unusual, or unexpected, or that otherwise deviate from what a mech "should" be... they shouldn't be taken away without a darn good reason, a reason better than "I don't like it, that's not how it was before."
