Now that the new Centurion has bee revealed, I'd like to start in that. Or if starting out in a Medium is out of the question, I'd like a Wolfhound.

Funnily enough, I just compared the costs of those two mechs on the BTech Wiki. The Centurion only costs slightly more than the Wolfhound.

They've said that all mechs will be available at start. My choice will depend on the final line up, how play goes, the maps and so on. At the moment Catapult, Centurion or Hunchback all look good depending on how I decide I need to play.

To be honest? Starter 'Mech...probably an Enforcer or the Centurion.

Heavy ... Catapult, Orion or Marauder
Assault .... Stalker, Awsome or Atlas

Call me old fashioned, but as a merc, I'd like to start in a Merlin, if not that then a Pheonix Hawk, or Chameleon.

Depends on the budget. My realistic "hope" is for a Phoenix Hawk PXH 1D. Its the much better version of the ghetto tech phoenix hawk.

Catapult. With Artemis IV and Case. As long as I have a good Scout (and I have no problem giving credit to scouts) to mark for me, I'll play fire support all day. If we can do a motto or saying on our mech, mine's going to be: "Fire Support; One Each."

TimberWolf would be my choice. I have been playing this game since MechWarrior 1 and the T-Wolf is the best all around mech for me.

OK! 3 the Mechs I would kill to start in are: Bushwacker, Shadow hawk, or Battle Hawk

BSW-L1 - The L1 variant of the Bushwacker is a configuration that changes the 'Mech to a close combat unit. The only long range weapon on the L1 variant is an ER Large Laser. For close combat, the L1 carries an LB-X Autocannon/20 that can fire either standard or cluster ammunition, adding versatility to the crippling firepower of this extremely deadly close combat weapon. An additional two and a half tons of additional armor was added to the BSW-L1, giving excellent armor protection. The L1 saw its engine upgraded to a Light Fusion Engine for increased survivability.

BH-K306 - The K306 variant is a modification of the Battle Hawk that looks to make the 'Mech more durable. This is accomplished by removing the XL Engine and replacing it with a Light Fusion Engine, which allows the 'Mech to withstand the destruction of a side torso. Additionally, the Medium Pulse Lasers have been upgraded to ER Medium Lasers and the Streak SRM-2 launcher has been replaced with a Streak SRM-4 launcher.

SHD-5D - The -5D Shadow Hawk is a Davion upgrade to the original. The -5D utilizes the new Rotary Autocannon/5 and also carries two Medium Lasers and a Streak SRM-4. In addition, the 'Mech uses an Endo Steel chassis & carries nine and a half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor, with CASE.

Light Level 1: WLF-1 Wolfhound
Light Level 2: WLF-2 Wolfhound
Medium Level 1: PXH-1 Phoenix Hawk/WVR-6M Wolverine
Medium Level 2: CRB-27 Crab
Heavy Level 1: TDR-5S Thunderbolt
Heavy Level 2: WHM-7S Warhammer
Assault Level 1: ZEU-6T Zeus
Assault Level 2: BLR-3M BattleMaster

Not reasonable to start in an Atlas or the like. Light mechs are usually where pilots start. If you are with a big outfit they might set you up in a middle range mech like the Wolfhound. But most would set you up in a less expensive (>2m c-bills) model like the UrbanMech, Flea, Wasp, or Commando. No way would any sane commander set up an inexperienced pilot in the 5-8m c-bill models like the Osiris, Owens, Adder, Cougar, or Kit Fox. Those are more for the veterans who have chosen Light Mechs as their specialty - the scouts and flankers who can make best use of the expensive, specialized systems on those platforms.

I would recommend giving new players a choice: If they wish to start in a very fast, very light mech (the sort of thing you would choose if you were making a career out of Light Mechs), they can have something like the Flea. If they want a much slower but more combative model (For the folks who are shooting for getting their hands on a Heavy or Assault class), the Urbanmech and those like it are a good start. Something between the two like the Commando would be a good third option - decent speed, decent armament, decent armor (For those who like Medium Mechs). All of them are good, solid light mechs with a low pricetag. And throwing in options for personal taste gives people a taste of what their end goal will be like - the Urbies get to experience how aggravating it is to be constantly lagging behind and outmaneuvered, but can stand their ground and hit hard; the Fleas get to be in the fast lane, keeping the commander informed, and harassing the enemy until the big boys arrive; and the Commando folks get the mid-line - they are fast enough to pursue and engage, but heavy enough to do something when they get there.

Then, once they've had enough of these starter mechs, they can move on to a cheap Medium (something in the 4m c-bill pricerange) that suits them, or pick up one of the more advanced Lights - a scout, or a long range harasser.

Realistically speaking you'd start out with a light mech, so Commando. No idea if they will allow you to start as a medium or heavy mech, let alone an assault one, right of the bat... unless they offer it if you pay real $.

But if what Flametrace says is correct then: Javalin (Light), Centurion (Medium), Caesar (Heavy), and Emperor (Assault).

It never occured to me that we would have the option of starting in anything other than lights but given a choice I'll go for a light anyway.
If chosing prefared mech would be a Raven but would much prefare to see some sort of blind or random mech assaignment.
Few possabilities would be answering some questions like in RPGs such as Ultima 7 and Morrowind or a character creater similar to the old BT RPG where it is based on chance.

Best compromise might be stating prefared and least wanted weapon systems, min speed, mechs role etc and level of past BT/MW experiance and then a randomly assaigned mech from those that match your needs.

If everyone has to start light and earn bigger mechs it will also discourage the 'want biggest gun now' types and render any potential griefers relativly harmless over time.

Everyone has access to all weight classes at the start, but many mechs are locked out by rank...

Just something to keep in mind.

ie: You can't start in an Atlas, but starting in a lower-tier assault (Zeus, Awesome) is perfectly plausible.
