So, after blowing my newly acquired cadet bonus money saved use on a Cicada 3M... I find it fragile, and lacking in firepower. My question to veteran players is this: Is it a wise cbill investment to sell this thing and grab any other mech, or is it wiser to grind out another 3-3.5 million bills?

That's not the best mech for start, for sure, but it's quite a bit expensive and you'll find that by selling it you won't gather much credits in comparison to what you spent for it. Plus it's one of the few mechs with ECM... I say keep it and try to find better builds for it. Sell it off only when you need mechbay space.
Quick build using default engine:

You need all the upgrades to run the thing decently; the above should be used to harass bigger targets from within 450m. Few times I could use decently the ballistic slot, you'll need smaller engines (300 or 280 or even 255xl). Since you should focus on getting newer (and better mechs) I say stick with the above.
Then consider other mechs in which employ your XL 320. Dragons should be on your list next, they can go fine with such an engine, although you'll need them with DHS and Endo all the time (sometimes even Ferro Fibrous too).
Another good mech to start with is the classic HBK 4SP, that later on you should upgrade to DHS, endo and use it with a 250 or 260 STD engine.

If it were me, I'd make a new account and get a whole new Cadet Bonus all over again.

If you think you're going to continue with the other variants of the cicada then you'll need to elite and master the skills and will require 3 of them anyway. If you know you won't be playing it then I would start a new account ...
