Hey guys,

I've been playing around with the trial mechs, I really enjoy the Catapult CPLT-K2 with it's PPCs, it feels like the only gun that does damage among the trial's mechs guns I've tried (and the range it nice, I like sniping). I also like the Jenner JR7-F with the quad Medium Lasers, they don't seem to put at dent on anything, and overheat like hell, but I like the idea of a fast-mover with firepower, a flanker.

From that, I'm wondering which mech I should look forward to buying, I've seen the "First Mech Purchase" (http://mwomercs.com/...ch-to-purchase/) thread and it seems a bit old, I want to avoid stuff that where once good but now have been nerfed, so I'm looking for up-to-date advice.

I'm wondering if there are any mech builds that are like the Catapult (long range) or the Jenner (fast moving).

And once I've got that build, how do I earn the CBills for it, I've noticed I get a Cadet Bonus, and from what I heard it expires after 25 matches, so after that is removed I'dd be getting something like 50k CBills per match, and a mech costs at least 2-3 million CBills, so is there a trick on maximizing credit-earning ?

Hunchback is my go-to starter chassis recommendation, and I believe most would tend to agree with me. Cheap, reasonably powerful, and really gets you to know how the game works. Feel free to check my guide - which has been expanded by tons of replies - to the Hunchback chassis.

Don't worry about your Cbills right now. By the time your cadet bonus runs out you should have something like 7 million Cbills. That's enough to get you almost any Mech in the game.

I'll throw in another vote for Hunchback, specifically the 4SP. Loaded with Medium Lasers and SRMs, it has a good balance between speed and firepower. It was my first purchased Mech and, even though I sold the 4SP, I don't regret it as my first. At only about 3.5 million Cbills you should have plenty of extra cash after your cadet bonus to equip it.

I have two main recommendations... first is a mech, and second is hint on how to earn cbills.

1) First mech... I went with the hunchback personally. It's not as incredible as its' gets made out to be, but it's a really good mech to learn with. Fast enouigh to be fun, and packs enough punch that you will actually feel like you are contributing. Depending on your flavor, you can either go the 4H, 4P, or 4SP. The H has a large ballistic slot if you wanted to try them out, the 4P boats a TON of lasers (which are really easy to do well with as a new player), and the 4SP has a bigger punch and is suited to players with a more "rambo" mindset.

I will also mention, that the Catapult (really any variant, depending on your goals) is a GREAT mech, but I don't suggest it as a first due to expense (most good builds cost 10mil +). You -can- grab a light, but there is something really satisfying about topping damage charts, and as a hunchie you can do that sometimes (whereas a light would need to be piloted by someone much more experience with many more cbills invested).

2) Earning C-bills. Simple really! Join with others. There is a teamspeak server, open to everyone, which constantly has pug groups forming. Just hop on and sit in the LFG channel. Money will come naturally at that point, and you can also have a sounding board for questions (although not toooooo many, as some folks are there to play, not talk :)). Here's a link: http://nogutsnogalaxy.net/. On the right there's a link to "Connect to Teamspeak".

That's all. Enjoy, and if you're enjoying it now, once you grab your own mech and get it setup, it feels like you're playing a completely different game.

I'd also say the 4SP. Get endo steel and double heat sinks, up the engine a bit (though keep it a standard), and you've got a great mech that can be tremendously satisfying to pilot. Nothing like hitting a Raven in the back with 12 short range missiles.

Thanks for the tips guys, I went with the Hunchback 4SP detailed here http://mwomercs.com/...unchback-guide/ / http://mwo.smurfy-ne...6b605fdf6398954 , first match went pretty well, 2 kills 2 assists, only had time to play a second match but I got baited and eaten alive :)

BTW What do the damage/DPS amounts mean, relatively to mech's armor/"health" ? Like if I do 10 damage, how much % is that on a light mech ?

Depends on their armor values. If they're foolish, they wont' have maxed armor.

DPS refers to the sustainability of the weapon. IE- how much damage does it do per shot, and how fast does it recycle.

Also, keep in mind that regular lasers are damage over time, and often spread their damage across several components, especially when shooting fast movers. Pulse lasers focus the damage a bit better due a shorter beam duration.

PPCs and ballistics do all of their damage to one location, which is their advantage.

Remember to upgrade double heatsinks, endo and the engine on the 4sp. With these upgrades you can really lay down an impressive ammount of firepower for only be 50 tons. The speed combined with the 4sp's excellent size/armor ratios make you quite resilient to dmg. With mine I like to initiate the fight running a short loop out and gathering fire. I usually fire my medium lasers and missiles till they are about to overheat then quickly duck out. By this time im still at 60%+ health so I cool off and re-enter the fight to collect on the kills I helped get. Be careful though in engaging heavy and assaults head on, these mechs can usually demolish you with an alpha if they are built right.
