the only thing that poll decided was what proportion of the forum can't spell ;)

For MW:O forums, if you want to be part of the community, you'll have to accept Atlai. Now, if, you're the enemy of fun, feel free to stick to the "traditional" spelling, heck, even call it the correct one. But don't look with envy to the rest of us while we are having fun with memes and all, while you only got your dictionary as reading material for bad days.

because spelling words wrong makes you 3% more "community" than me

I tend to disagree with 90% of what is posted on the forum so I'm pretty happy not being "community" if becoming illiterate is one of the entry requirements :)

smiley face because I'm posting for comedic effect rather than any sense of actually caring if people want to spell stuff wrong to feel they belong somewhere

We should probably get back on topic. The OP is probably hoping for something useful in that regard.*

Currently I believe that Medium Lasers are just too efficient compared to MPLs, so that the shorter beam duration - while an advantage compared to a longer duration - is not really enough. There is, of course, a window where you might prefer MPLs over MLs - if you just don't have enough hard points, but still spare weight. For the 2-energy spider, I could easilly see 2 MPLs being better than 2 MLs. Especially since all alternatives force you into using only a single weapon, which might not be worth it. (I dunno, maybe now a LPL could be worth trying?)

MPL is more focused damage. However, when a Jenner/Commando is flying around your heavy/assault mech at 150kph. I'd rather just toss out the ML beam and drag it across his legs multiple times. As with the MPL you usually only hit 1-2 out of the 3 bursts on his legs. With MLs you can click and drag, and focus 75+% of the beam duration on his legs. It's a matter of preference.

I find that standard lasers with their always on beam, tend to miss less when tracking faster targets, and the extended beam time gives you even more time for sync and hitscanning to make sure you are leading them properly.

I understand the extra beam time. It gives you a little longer to get it settled on the target, especially when you have to lead and you're basically guessing as to how much to lead by. As for the "pulses," I'm pretty sure that's just a audio/visual effect and has nothing to to with when the beam is actually applying damage. Working from memory here, but I believe all beams do their damage in 10 increments split evenly across their full duration.

+1

Whenever I see people arguing that stupid is cool, it reminds me of the movie Idiocracy, and I shudder.

If I can squeeze MPL's on any mech and manage the heat I will (say for slow assaults)

More damage, shorter beam duration make it worlds better, especially in a light on light fight IMO. Hard part is maintaining the heat and building you're mech around them.

I know the DPS for MPL is better, but we really need to work heat into that equation somehow. Because it fires faster, and has more heat, it is going to cause you more heat issues and cause them faster and is less shots. So that will effect how much actual damage it does. Also your fighting style matters, if you face hug your opponent, or circle fight, the MPL is better as the range of the weapon doesn't come into play. If you hit and run, or fight slowly moving forward, the added range means you are capable of doing damage for longer periods of time as you enter range sooner and exit range later, and would effect the true damage done.

My Cicada-3M uses 3 MPL and 1 SL because I go so fast, I want quick strikes and the pulse lasers let me keep my beam on the enemy short for the damage done.

Personally, unless I'm piloting a Heavy, I go for regular MLasers just for the benefits of tonnage. However, OP forgot one big difference in ML vs MPL which is RECYCLE TIME. MPL have a fraction of a second shorter recharge time, which means that over time, the MPL will do EVEN MORE damage since you can fire it more often.

MPLAS - if you prefer a more twitch thing

MLAS - if you prefer a smooth, slow hand
