Growing up with the original/classic battletech, and seeing how the wars/histories have evolved both the Mechs and the pilots, I would recommend adding another depth to the game, maybe simple initially but providing a path for more complexity/depth as the game progresses.

Maybe just start simple with 'War' Categories of:
*Succession War - original/classic Mechs only (no ER/LBX/anything, maybe extra costs for modifications as not Omnitech)
*Clan Wars or Dark Age - Recent/modern class of mechs.

Obivously, you can increase the number of categories depending on your depth of history/technology selections.

PVP: Introduce a new level of difficulty, as original inner sphere versus Omnitech mechs are not exactly a 1-to-1 fair fight.

Sentimental: Just for the players that prefer the 'classics'.

Roleplaying: Preparing a bridge/path for more in-depth role playing, and players more familiar with older technology might be able to squeeze that extra amount as there is so much experience/knowledge of the old tech nuances comared to newer tech. If classics are at a disadvantage, maybe add classic-only enhancements from LosTech (star league) that are not interoperable with Omnitech frames.

Other thoughts, please post!

Given that they have already said that everything is timeline specific and we have a MechLab for modifications where you can put on any available tech, I don't think that this is feasible. A number of people may want it but that option was lost with the introduction of the MechLab.
