I'm sure you did it solo pugging blindfolded on a 286 too.

Solo pugging yes, I will admit I used the free 24h ticket.

Hmmm. I play this game for fun. I guess I'm grinding? f I want to master a 3L I can do it without paying any real money or ever playing another mech, it just takes a lot longer. However, mastering a mech isn't necessary to be competitive.

yes well sure it isnt...and i wont do it...maybe on a long term when i bought many more mechs with the CBs i will earn over time. I just dont like the system that it is not possible to master a mech without owning 3 variants.

its not a major loss to not get elite skills or modules...but why make it this way? why do i have to play 2 variants that are not fun to play...worthless designs and just inferior to the one i want to play?

ofc you could say nerf the one that is so much better...but i dont want to shout for nerf...rather buff the others. ravens are just a good example...while other mech variants are still worth of getting and playing.

It's been mentioned, but I would like to re-enforce that the xp grind on secondary mechs is unnecessary to complete and it's your incentive to ante up a few bucks if you wish to skip over it in this f2p system.

Play the H out of the mech you want, buy some MC, convert xp, buy secondary mech, jam it full of gxp to the point you require for your primary choice, buy secondary mech 2, jam it full of gxp, then carry on playing your main mech. All you need is 1 open bay, and you don't even need to ever pilot the mechs you don't want 1 time.

If you have to work for a "minor" bonus, than just don't do it. Actually if the game ain't fun as is, why are you still playing?

If you have a Hero Mech and Founders Bonus...and premium time earniing credits is so much easier...but when you havent...this game turns out into the biggest grindfest ever.

Biggest grindfest ever? Quit gaming now, son, because you're in for a world of hurt if you think this game is a grindfest. Every game needs some grind so that there's something to work toward. Otherwise, you'd just load up, grab the mech you wanted, play for a few days, get bored with nowhere to go and quit.

Yea. That sounds like someone who knows they won't reset again since they said they won't; and wants an unfair advantage over newbies. I've seen crap like that before in other games ("Oh it's not fair, XYZ should be harder but don't take it away from me because I EARNED it already"); and in life, vote Republican much?

The time is going to pass whether you get the Elite levels or not, so why not get them?

I'm guessing you've never played Rift or Guild Wars.

The 'grind' in MWO is trivial at best. What some call a grind, I call playing.

It's a free-to-play game. If there wasn't a grind it'd be a total loss proposition. Furthermore every game institutes some kind of grind these days to restrict your game time and therefore keep you from supporting their competition. Simple stuff here. If you don't love the grind MC will convert your XP over so you won't have to play those other mechs.

The thing to me is its totally stupid to have to buy 3 of the same mechs to get the elite skills period. You should be able to level and elite skill any mech just with one. But I do believe you should have higher XP levels to elite skill single mechs. Its totally a sick grind to elite skill 3 mechs and its boring as hellll. I would rather buy more mech bays and different mechs and grind to level each one to elite.

Finished Atlai and Stalkers so far. It was PAINFUL. Glad the heaviest ones are gone...until Cyclops or Highlander shows up.

If you find the game to be a boring grind you either have the wrong mech, the wrong load-out or the wrong game. For a while my Centurions felt like a bit of a grind, but then I started experimenting with XL engines and SRMs and I was actually disappointed to finish unlocking the elite skills as it meant it was time to move on to Cataphracts.

C-bills shouldn't be that much of a problem, admittedly on my Jenners I usually had enough mech-xp saved up to buy a few elite skills before I could afford all the upgrades and kit for my next variant, but that wasn't a real problem as it meant when I unlocked the elite skills I could pick some immediately. Once you get a bit better and start earning more in matches you should be able to have the next mech ready to go long before you need it, I have a new Spider waiting in the mech-bay and the cash I'm earning unlocking the module slots on my Cataphracts is going towards getting an engine for every mech.

I've played both, to end game. Rift's grind is worse than Guild Wars (for PvP gear anyway, I can't speak to PvE at all).

I'm still trying to find something I like to play half as much as my 3 Atlases.

Welcome to a free to play game.

Did you have to put up money to play a multi player mechwarrior game with decent graphics that's updated every 2 weeks with features and content being added? No, you didn't. So the price is slow progress unless you want to put some money down for all of this content.

In my opinion, that's is absolutely fair.

I find myself looking at mech lines as a whole now, rather than individual builds, because of this mechanic.

I started with my Cicada, and now it looks like I'll be selling it. I love the 2A, and the 3M has ecm, but the other ones just don't intrigue me.

This is part of the reason I bought an Awesome as my Assault mech. It has interesting and varied builds, and each one will feel different, but effective.

I recently looked at the Jenner line, and noticed the same thing. The 3 of them have slots and capabilities that will make for 3 distinct lil bugs, all useful.

Also, I think the grind will be softened once clan warfare kicks in. People will enjoy the individual battles more when there is a meta behind them, and there will likely be contracts and such to possibly boost Cbill gain.

Give it time. I honestly believe it will improve.

So MWO is the first online game you've played then. Honestly MWO's grind is more illogical than difficult.

To avoid the grind do this:

1. Pick a mech you like and want to master.

2. Buy 3 mechs of the variant you like. (so you don't have to wait for them to be Ready between matches)

3. Play the game and enjoy it.

4. Somehow get $15 and buy MC with it.

5. Use your MC to convert your pile of XP to GXP.

6. Unlock the other variants with GXP.

To make it even easier buy some Premium time while you play. Obviously you're not going to unlock Master in a day. Or probably even a week. But it's not that big a deal.

The 10% bonuses to various things are nice but actual skill outweighs any bonuses/modules.

And if you've just started play this game, trust me, those bonuses aren't going to save you. People with 6 months of play under their belts will stomp you even if you had 50% bonuses.
