So what do you need... i have payed a hundred bucks of shipment costs to get my hands on the Deimos Miniature...i'm ready to pay another hundred bucks to keep the community whole.
I'm not ready to watch BattleTech - die for another one - like it was when FASA sold it to Wizkids...

Don't destroy mech love.

There is a couple of reasons for this.
1) Already small community will be split. My clan is from all over and I want to drop with anyone of them at any time depending on who is on VOIP
2) Last bit of faith that this game will survive will be out the window. Their inability to handle something as simple as central login with regional sandboxes removes all faith that they will be able to deliver in a reasonable timeframe the other features this game needs to keep me around. I love the combat but I am already becoming jaded to be honest. They need to give me an additional layer soon or my attention will probably get hijacked by other titles.

It's not like renting a BF2 server, but it's exactly like renting a regular Win/Linux server, which is probably being done on a much larger scale every day. We're not talking about co-operation with game server providers, that's an entirely different thing. The question of renting vs. buying and hosting their own servers is a financial one and I don't see any issues with licensing etc. unless PGI specifically want to subcontract running the EU side business to some other company. Game servers do not require backups or other such failsafes, just redundancy to that a sufficient number is available at any given time even if some fall off the grid. The account servers are an entirely different matter, which is another reason why not having different ones for each region might help save on costs.
Nevertheless and as you also mentioned, wether PGI rent servers from around the world or host their own server farms, there are really no technical reasons for not having one central master account / matchmaker service and thus no real reason to split the community. PGI may of course have some reasons we have overlooked, but I don't have enough imagination to come up with any.

This. If they're unable to make something that every other decent online game has (except for persistent worlds, like MMOs), then I'm out of here.
I have an account on iRacing.com. Well, iRacing has servers in the USA, Australia and Europe (The Netherlands to be precise). There is ONE account, then you select the server where you want to run. That's it. That is how it should be done. Select the server zone where you want to drop from a list. If they can do it for races that are a lot longer (up to 6 hours), why not for 15 minute matches?

I really do hope they can come up with a better option.

While architecture no doubt plays a role, well - imho keeping this community unified and playing together is vital. for both competitive reasons, future proofing & unity.
We don't need duplicate playernames. we do need an ability to play in asia or europe with our friends. This is huge for me, mechwarrior is probably one of the most international titles out there, and a lot of my friends are from europe/russia/asia
forcing us to choose only 1 region to play on is like telling us that in the 21st century age of the internet we are not allowed to have our facebook friends to play games with.
That's just plain bad PR, bad for the game, bad for to competitive scene...
I see 0 value added by a decision to split the community like this.

That way people wouldn't be forced to leave their units and friends... PGI also wouldn't have to run two different community warfare scenarios.
Splitting a playerbase, especially one that isn't all that large is not a wise move...

I'm all for a split as this is an FPS and having a ping that bounces from 100-250 whilst playing against folk with pings of 20-50 puts me at a disadvantage. When playing other FPS games I avoid servers that I have a ping of 50 or more to.

Hmmm... good point. So the community warfare part would have to remain separate. But I still stand by keeping our accounts mirrored on both servers.

Always play on the server of your opponents, because if you lose you can always blame it on bad ping.

I fully expect them to announce their intention to force users to permanently choose a region, then retract that decision to allow flexible region selection later on. I mean, just look at camo- blind ******* freddy could have seen that NO ONE was going to enjoy paying to paint their mechs every damn time (phase 1), and that permanent colour unlocks were clearly the only reasonable option (phase 2).

I am just glad they listen to the community... yea, it would be nice if it was done "right" the first time.... but, hey, what are you gonna do?
How many mechs did we get with head hitboxes that were too large, where the community told them way before the mech was even released? They finally learned though... I think...

I think the reason is that technically it is easier to replicate the whole system in other data centers than create a 3 tier system with a centralized accounts server and decentralized game servers.
This is the short road to a train wreck. Please take the time and allocate the resources to do this PROPERLY.

I don't see this as an issue. Why not just let us choose which regions to play on for CW? I for one wouldn't mind dropping on all 3 regions servers, a fast ping is nice, but sometimes having fun is more important, seriously a 250ms ping is nothing compared to mech3

Either host several Community Warfare instances or parts of the map around the world. You can either choose which region you want to fight on or different planets can give home field advantage to different player bases. Host Rasalhague world battles for example in Sweden etc.
