Ok, another question(since ive been hanging out here for some reason anyway.) whats with the different classes of ponies? like filly, stallion, some have wings, some have horns, why?

Foal - Young equine
Filly - Female Foal
Colt - Male Foal

Stallion - Adult Male, ungelded equine
Mare - Adult Female equine


As to Unicorns versus Pegasi versus Earth Ponies, well, it's just genetics. :shrug:

Is it bad I knew absolutely nothing about equine terms until finding the show?

Feels odd getting some sort of educational benefit out of a children's show, but I guess it'll be worth it for all those times I need to reference equine terms.

Pony DnD has been a part of the MLP franchise from day one.



The recent adaptation is simply better written and thought out.


As most are aware, RPGs, table top or MMORPG, are the perview of the adult hobbiest.



As such, the huge fandom among bronie men and women should not be that much of a surprise.



But for those of you who harbor a healthy skepticism, there is another explanation.

There are three pony tribes (or at least it was so in the beginning): Earth ponies (regular horses), Unicorns (horned ones), and Pegasi (winged ones). The Earth ponies have the magic of the land, so only they can farm and grow food. Unicorns have fancy magic, so they can use telekinesis and cast spells based on their unique talents as represented by their cutie marks (Rarity has a gemfinder spell and a cutie mark of three gems, for instance). Some Unicorns are special in that their talent is magic itself (Twilight Sparkle, for instance). Pegasi can fly, walk on clouds, and have weather magic. They basically control the weather all across Equestria except in the Everfree forest.

There are also royal Alicorns, or Pegasus-Unicorns, who contain all three traits in their bloodline, physically and magically, and form the Equestrian true ruling class. So far only three have been seen: The two immortal princesses and Cadence, Twilight Sparkle's sister-in-law. Interestingly, it is implied that the Alicorns aren't all-powerful, despite some being effectively deities. Some Unicorns can in fact possess more magic than any of the royal Alicorns. Twilight could easily beat up Cadence, and her brother Shining Armor is so powerful his force field can kick enemies all the way out of Equestria in an instant (with Cadence's help).

Filly is actually a term for young female horses. The term for a mature female horse is mare. A stallion is a male horse. So the previous division of filly vs stallion is incorrect because the main pony characters and the majority of female ponies in the series are young adults - hence mares. The characters themselves also make a distinction between when they were young fillies and now. It does appear that there are far more mares in Equestria than stallions. This of course reflects the population in most ranches and domesticated horse communities in the world. Mares are more preferred than stallions, plus usually only a few handpicked superior stallions (often retired racehorses) are allowed to mate with mares, to create the best breeds.
