I don't know...21?

I do know that there end up being a lot of layers on things, I've just never spent enough time in photoshop or the like to get a better guess.

May even have had more at some point when I worked on it, lots of temporary layers with very small stuff I usually merge onto other layers later... I should start counting how many layers I use total, probably a ridiculous number... xD

Anyway, it's not 21...
Note: it's not 1 either, I don't merge each and every layer, I usually keep certain things separate.

Hrm. I ended up with 18 for the one I did. However, it's not very good and only looks decent cause I ended up scaling it down to avatar size (150x150)

Hrmmm...let's see, if it were me, I would have done...

Outline
Shading
Mane/Tail
Eyes
Necklace
Wing
Cutie Mark
Body
Background

So unless you have individual layers for each section of shading (I usually merge all my shading layers), I'm gonna guess...9 layers? Maybe a few more if you have the horn and ear on individual layers actually...

Edited for derped grammar

Spot on actually!
Even the organisation of the layers would have been mostly correct if I hadn't modified it after it was basically finished...
So anything you'd have me draw for you? (No fancy backgrounds though, not really experienced with those, and they take forever)

Got another picture to post btw...

yeah like I said, I couldn't sleep and I never really finished the image or had time to spruce it up so there's a lot of color bleed or lack there of where the white sections come through. I was having a lot of trouble isolating the muzzle flash using the selection tools and hand painting was coming out awful. I think that might have something to do with coloring with mouse/keyboard on a desktop haha. Thanks for all the tips though guys I really appreciate it :D I can't draw whatsoever but I do enjoy using my digital crayons every once in awhile :).

oh and here's my layers list :

Ha, I was actually afraid of that; since I honestly have been having enough trouble trying to come up with stuff to draw myself - let alone to request of other people! :)

So I guess I'm gonna offer you to either draw whatever you want; or if you want to, give the request to somebody else...especially since I feel like I cheated since I've been working in photoshop for years now! :D

21 layers.... not including the original and the gradient overlays...
I eludes me why you drew around the character when you're actually using layers though, as that makes it unnecessary.

If you want to get into drawing, I'd suggest to get a basic tablet, decent ones are available for about 50 bucks. That's if you're looking at the "big" manufacturers though, you can get some very basic ones for half of that and those usually work as well...
If you're mostly just interested in doing stuff like what you did with that derpy-pic and you're usuing PS, I'd suggest to watch a few tutorials on how to use paths! Don't worry, it'll only take one or two vids and a tiny bit of practice to understand how they work and they're very easy to use even with mouse and keyboard. They're gonna make your life a lot easier!

Kasai, drawing what I want is not the point of a request! :D
I'd be doing that anyway... :) I thought about giving it to the one who can tell me how many layers I used for the Pacman-pic but that might be too easy now. I dunno, you pick someone if you want to or I'll just "save" it for someone else later, still got a request I need to finish after all and then I have a few ideas for pictures I want to draw after that anyway...

If you don't have any ideas what to draw then ask other people for requests...
Even if it's just a ref-sheet, you might get a cool idea. That's actually what the request I'm currently working on was supposed to be but then I had an idea and turned it into a combination of ref-sheet and wallpaper... :(

Honestly couldn't understand all this talk of MLP when I first dived into the forums here ... queue my reading the first few pages of this forum, finding out it's done by the same group who did Powerpuff girls and Dexters lab, watching the first episode on youtube, followed by me watching the rest of both seasons.

Instant convert :D

Can't get enough of it now, but I'm even more ashamed to admit this to my friends than I am my love of Hello Kitty!

I order my layers obviously in order of what's on top, all the way to the very back. Usually something like this:

Top Ear
Mane Outline
Mane Colors
Mane Fill
Eyebrows/Lashes
Eye Reflections
Pupils
Iris
Eyes
Head Outline
Head Fill
Mouth
Front Arm Outline
Front Arm Fill
Cutie Mark
Front Leg Outline
Front Leg Fill
Tail Outline
Tail Colors
Tail Fill
Torso Outline
Torso Fill
Back Leg Outline
Back Leg Fill
Back Arm Outline
Back Arm Fill
Plain Background Color
Original Sketch

Lots, and lots of layers.

Also, it may be linked on ED, but it's purty. And Fluttershy. And seriously trippy in a good way. Don't click it off before seeing it kick in after a minute or so.
