Once your armor is gone thy can hit and roll for crits, but with the firepower a lot of people are swinging around. the first and second hit to the head will be with more than 1 gun.
You are much more likely to die from the normal damage than ever having a chance for your attacker to roll any crit at all, let alone hit the ammo.

Look at it like this, AC20 ammo, 7rounds, none used, when hit critically would destroy you. Hell, even 1 round left would destroy the cockpit rendering you incapable of combat, but very much capable of spectating.

Catapults would be a good exception but not Cataphracts as they have a minuscule headshot box. Unless the Phract was shut down due to overheating, a headshot on them requires a huge amount of luck.

Yeah, Catapults are the only mechs I can consistently kill by headshot, especially when painting them with a few lasers, Aside from the Cataphract coming out with a GINORMOUS head hitbox that was hotfixed, I'm not even sure if I've killed any other mech by headshot... Ever.... in like 1100 games.

- either won't lose your armor often before dying
- or where you lose your armor last
You could even argue that if you have an XL engine, you can put ammo into side torso: if this section is stripped, you'll die quick anyway (e.g. lights).
Note critical hits are distributed amongst all items in that section, probability to hit an item is proportional to the number of critical slots it occupies. So if you have 3 DHS in a section (9 critical slots), you might put a ton of ammo there, too.
