Also having a hard time getting a handle on the cost for this game. Can't see store options. "Free to play" typically means freaking expensive.
If I wasn't an old Battletech fan, I would simply give up now. That and the gameplay shots look pretty freaking amazing.

What are your PC's specs?
As for the store, this game does not include a cash shop as other F2P do. Also, this game is not P2W in my opinion.
If you enter the Mechlab, click on the Owned Mechs section and then click on Add New Mech. You will then see the available Mechs and the store.
Hint: the Mechlab UI is incomplete. It's missing a bunch of info.
Check http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ and http://mwowiki.org/wiki/Main_Page before you start spending your C-Bills.

Paid-only items include: additional mech bays, hero mechs, premium time(CB and XP bonus multiplier), premium paint, premium camo patterns.
Regular battlemechs can optionally be purchased for MC or with in-game currency (C-bills).
As a new player, you will earn a large bonus amount of c-bills for your first 25 matches (the "Cadet Bonus"). This will allow you to obtain your first real mech relatively quickly.
sorry about the crash dump, that's over my head. hopefully someone else can offer some insight into your technical issues.

I don't have any owned mechs because I literally just installed it and launched it. It's all "trial mechs". Really odd view there too... looks like "bubbles".

Starting with some basic tech support, have you:
installed Direct X 9c (required but not included, not included in some operating systems either)
installed the latest microsoft .net framework
Installed the latest drivers for your video card
Ensured your PC meets minimum/reccomended system specs
And yeah, for now you'll only have Trial mechs. Use them as a learning experience (learn how fast you want to go, which weapons you like, how to drive a mech, etc) until you earn enough for your first real mech (standard recommendation is a HBK 4SP as your first mech)

So far I've bought some MCs (mech credits?) to buy bays because I don't want to keep tossing chassis and having to buy them over again at some point. But I've not spent any MCs on mechs or paint jobs or camo or anything else. For $30 (less than the purchase price of a lot of games) I get 6500 MC / 300 MC per bay = 21 additional bays, on top of the 4 you start with. That's 25 different mechs to run at any given time, if you really want. And it's going to take quite a while to build up enough cbills to fill all those bays with upgraded mechs.. maybe by then I'll spend a little more money for bays, if needed.
Granted.. people can spend MCs on buying -stock- mechs, but I've not seen any way to purchase -gear- (lasers, ammo, engines, etc etc) with anything other than earned cbills from playing. They can also buy paint jobs and camo (doesn't effect game mechanics), but you can't really just spend MCs to "win" since stock mechs are pretty ill fitted compared to upgraded units, and just being able to buy dozens of different stock mechs doesn't help you become a good player.
So.. no "pay to win" (yet), just pay to have more options, and sooner. Just note that larger lump sum purchases net more MCs per dollar spent.. I'd suggest some planning before you buy as spending $7 a pop for the smallest package will end up wasting money if you buy it over and over and over.
Oh, and before you buy your first mech and mess up trying to upgrade it, swing over to http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab to build your mechs. Note if you need Double Heatsinks, Endo Steel, etc etc.. note the cost for those upgrades in the mech lab, and make sure you either have enough cbills to do the full conversion (remembering to do the upgrades before you try to fit the gear), or make sure you can configure enough of what you want incrementally to make sure you like what you're getting as you go, until you can afford to finish off the upgrades. I quit my first account because I wasted my cadet bonus by not knowing how upgrading everything worked (or the final cost) and ended up scrapping my first run at my own mech.. only to find it was all fine, I just didn't know how to adequately upgrade things in the right orders to fit what needed to fit.
Although, I'm not sure what to make of that crash dump. There are quite a few threads about the .NET Framework being touchy, and DX9c needing to be installed in some cases, but since you're getting into obscure Windows issues, I can't be of much help. If nothing else, you could open a ticket with support@mwomercs.com and see if they have any ideas.
Once you sort out the issues and are in game running a mech across various city/landscapes, shooting lasers and launching missiles and raining destruction down on your enemies (and being blown to **** by them, too

It's possible you are simply missing an entire pak file, such as the texture.pak.
If you are missing the texture pak, click here http://patcher.mwome...me/Textures.pak
You can also change the filename in the URL to seperately snag any individual .pak file.
This will save you from having to simple uninstall/reinstall the entire game client.

Redshift, I'm quoting this to make it easier for me to find later. The patcher *.pak URL seems like the kind of thing that could come in handy. Thanks for supporting the community.

May I suggest an MD5 hash for patch updates? I think it would prevent these types of errors, or at least make them explicit.

Thing is there is, however it doesn't check the contents of the folders, it just checks to see if the folders are there. But yes a system that checks the MD5 hash on all files on say start-up would help this issue as you aren't the only one that has had it.
A Dev can possibly post more but thats all I know on this certain issue at this time.
And congrats on the install! Welcome to MWO!
