Slight flaw with your logic there. Yes, it will punish people with expensive equipment the most, true, but that will also force people to use only cheap mechs (lights, and maybe mediums) and never focus on the other classes. There will be a sort of stygmatization (is that a word? If it's not, I invented it right now! you're all witnesses!) because of that. It will also take from the fun experience of the game.
Also, what would you do if all you had was an assault mech, you just tweaked it, took it on a run, did well. Got killed in the end and ended up with less cash than what you need to repair it? You'll be forced to use the trial mechs for most of your career because getting killed even if you win, will set you back so far behind. No one will want to field an assault mech unless it's a rare occasion, most of the matches will just be lances of lights.
I say they did a good job with removing R&R. Allows people to have more fun, If you're willing to take from everyone's experience just because some people lack the brain cells necessary to stay more than 100 meters away from a splat cat, a boat so rare that I've only seen maybe twice in the last month, you should weight the good and bad again, see if it's actually worth it to do that.
