Now "noob" means one of two things, or both. It either means "You are a player that plays in a manner I disagree with," or "I am calling you this so everyone that hears will know I have no idea how to be a good teammate and/or I do not understand the proper way this game is played."

I think the other word you are looking for is "Nob" or "Nobb":

Urban Dictionary: nobb

"misspelling of "nob", British slang for *****

"he is such a nobb"

Also used to show that he/she is playing badly.

But since when has ANY forum (or in game) EVER bothered to use the Queens English correctly.
Though I give full marks to "kingdom of loathing" who makes you take a test before allowing you to join forums.

zvero: mildly amusing, but you should note that this post is about what is going on today. Plus I think you will find that the latest generation of gamers are far more socially disconnected than previous generations.

kunae: problem is the fact that people are insulting others, not simply misusing or misspelling words.

Lupin: You missed the point entirely, post has nothing to do with spelling.

A brand new player is a newbie

A noob is someone that never learned something, even after some time, so he will perform as a newbie even though he is not. Noobs often refuse to learn anything but will, often with great joy, share horrid advice with other players.

You win the internetz.

Really, the overuse of the word has gotten to the point of it losing meaning entirely. It is usually used as a generic insult that could mean any number of things, sort of like what has happened to both of the three-letter words used to describe homosexuals.

Very true, I just see it as a general insult that people use a lot. I don't personally use it as an insult just like I don't use the words you alluded to for homosexuals, but that's because I'm not a fan of insults. People, especially on the internet, are going to use insults and many of them are going to evolve into their own meaning, such is the nature of words. I see no reason to try to fight it, I would prefer to try to get people to be more constructive rather than insulting even if that's essentially just as futile.

Words get ruined all the time. Like fierce means *** and *** used to mean happy. Special now means mentally disabled. Partners means same sex marriage. I guess its the way it goes.

3rdworld: reread original post, Complaint is not about internet lingo at all. It is about ignorant people insulting others.

No one can ever "insult others". The only way you can "be insulted" is if you choose to be.

Your spelling it wrong it has a silent zero.

Its actually 'N0o0ob' which has been shortened over time to 'n00b'

What's in a name?
At the moment, "noob" is popular. In 20 years, it'll be some other word.
Name calling will always be around. Just roll with it.

For the record, it was the ATARI 2600, and I bought it with my own money from mowing the yard (back in my day, of course). ;)

Nice thought, very philosophical in a way. Problem is there is a significant difference between "insulting" and "being insulted" that undercuts your point. "Insult" does not imply cooperation from the intended victim.

I think that is the point ignorant players not knowing what words to use anyway so use wrong one.

I use noob to refer to anyone who has not served in the active duty military, or anyone who has recently joined the same.

For most of the people called noob in game I recognize they are merely amateurs, dumb, or a new player. The first two descriptors are more accurate if they are the case, and the last is not a reason to pick on someone.

Yes, it always does.

Being insulted requires cooperation from the alleged "victim". If you choose not to be insulted by what someone says, then their attempt fails.
