They "nerfed" the backspace ^^
If you type ingame and want to delete what you just wrote you cannot just hold backspace you need to press it once for each letter.
They will release a hero mech "the backspacer" shortly

the only other way to clear your chat without spamming backspace is to hit escape then cancel the quit mission screen. Just don't accidentally hit the quit mission button!
SUGGESTION: when chat is open, pressing Escape once should cancel the chat and not open the quit mission screen.

Many many +1's for this Suggestion to come true.
Accidentally opening the Chat window (wondering why your Mech isn't responding, to find a string of D's in the Chat) while in the heat of battle. Then, to get slapped again by having to hit ESC, then seeing the exit game screen and then having to hit ESC yet again. It is akin to a lifetimes of anguish in mere seconds. aaarrggghhhhh!
One ESC's worth of anguish would indeed be better.

Totally agree, the actual bugged backspace is quite... erm... 'exhausting'.
