If someone have invested this much time and then have 5 mechbays, the chance that he will pay is greater. He hits your wall, but he has already invested so much time for the accolades, that he is more willing to pay and not to lose his investment.
Paying for playing is not so great, until you do it right and it takes, like in my example, 30 month for 300mc if you play every day.
This is not about giving away something, its more about getting more money and players.
Look at Rockefeller and his oillamps (1905).
