is there any way to choose a game where there are no other players so you can do things like practice, or troubleshoot keybindings?

Not having any way to learn the game hands on without getting ruined outright or causing others on your team to get pissed off because you don't know how to do things makes this game very unfriendly to brand new players.

+1 to this fellow.

Bonus idea:

Training Mode. You start with your friend, or alone, or with some team, battle on chosen map.

Just to walk around and see what are possibilities.

That is the same reason I played planetside 2 twice then deleted it. This game may be next

I have to second this. I've been playing mech sim games on and off for about 15 years now, so I know the basics of moving around, but as with any new game, I still had a little trouble getting used to the controls at first. Now, personally, that isn't too big of a problem for me, but it was still annoying that for the first couple of matches, I felt like a total letdown to my team, because I was still wrestling with the controls and performing way below the level I'm used to (which is admittedly mediocre, but still). A training mode would have been perfect to get a feel for the game before you're thrust into the frenzy that MWO can be.

Yes, if you would even take note of the older mech warriors I am sure they had a practice mode... Did they not?

This proposal has come up multiple times on the forums, but I really like it and thus: bump. Although you might consider checking the threads in the "Suggestions" subforum.

And/or like the books have the Gauntlet and MW2 had a training mission with a tough old Mech Pilot abusing the crap outta ya for doing silly things like breathing, breeding and other such sillyness!☺

Same here. I installed this game and PS2 on the same day, and ran into the same trouble with both games. Last Mechwarrior game I played was MW3, that was a little over a decade ago. I need at least a little alone time with my mech. Sucks to be searching for keybinds while I'm running headlong into buildings, falling off bridges and being blown to bits by LRM's before I can even set up a decent weapons grouping. :)

this and you can set up your graphics settings that way, pretty annoying that its not in the escape menu ingame but a trial area would be useful for this.

I was going to suggest mektek.net, to play MW4 in single player for practice, controls would be similiar, but looks like their going through some changes, and is no longer available.

I have been saying this since launch, a generic area you could load into that lets you test your controls, weapons and practice with move and fire with your loadout. I cant see how this would be hard, a static map with targets and hard points to move around is basic for almost every game I have played.

I managed to get use to it the hard way but a testing/training ground would be awesome, and it would be easier to convince friends to try it out as they are totally in that boat.

I support this idea. I am playing for only 3 days now, and got a flamestorm about being a f****noob etc. only because I found out the hard way that my key bindings were not optimal ...

I think there are far more important /needed things to be worked in yet.

I don't see why its so hard to just jump in game and ask people. Or just read the controls page.

Honestly, if you're struggling to learn the game due to a lack of tutorial then you probably should play something else.

I think you're struggling with comprehension. The OP wants a place where he could try out his loadout and controls set up - offline. Jumping in game and 'asking people' like you suggest won't help when all you want is just to figure out how to properly pilot your mech.

Oh and BTW - I'd also like to see such a feature. An arena with mock targets and an obstacle course of some sort.

I don't think the whole "Well if you can't figure it out go play something else" is a great selling point on the game. All things considered this is a product which is designed to some extent to make money. Telling customers to go some where else doesn't sell. I've had a heck of a time trying to get things figured out myself and thankfully no one is ripping on me too hard.

I've been testing control combos so having a bit of a "training" area would be nice but at the same time I think part of the reason I've kind of stuck with it is because in game with other mechs running around really gives you a good feel for the game itself. A training area with targets and such wouldn't really tell you what the game is about. Sure you could point and shoot really well but this isn't the run and gun solo commando type game.

I've never played any mech warrior game EVER before now, I'm not sure if its just me at this game but I find looking at everything on the screen is important. The weird thing I've found is I'm always watching my map, making sure I'm staying with the group, and trying to understand the defensive positions. I find alot more of the knowledge base comes from watching the cams of the other pilots.

Theres been plenty of times where I'm pretty sure I didn't even hit the broad side of the mountain in front of me. I don't think anyone minds because most of the time I'm like the streaker running by the front counter while the dudes with the AK47's are firing from the front door.

More or less building muscle memory to key strokes is the only way your really going to get any good at piloting, and thats really just by doing it, .. thats my opinon

I just started for the first time last night and I have to say I was amazed by the community. I was really expecting to be torched and hated on since training mode is nothing but a slap on the *** and a "get out there!"

I just wanted to pass a quick [golf clap] to all those experienced teammates that I played with last night. Thank you very much for giving me the time to learn how to get my torso caught up with my legs! And also to all you guys on the other team that had such a hard time killing an overheating chunk of metal trying to walk through a hill.

And yes...there should be a basic training map. Hell an empty chunk of grass would be fine. Something so I can work on my controls/key bindings outside a real game should be in here.

Also...GREAT GAME guys. Excellent, excellent game so far.

Some sort of in-game training ground, against bots or players, would be nice.
