I run 4 LPLs and an AC20 with 3 tons of ammo, and a standard 300 engine. Works pretty well for brawling, you just have to make your laser shots count and chop off limbs while surpressing with constant AC20 fire. Trim down the armor to high 400s (hint: legs) and don't overload on heatsinks, you're not going to be pulsing that often.

I've had success with a few different RS builds over the last few months. It all comes down to what you preferred play style is. For me, I tend to do best engaging between 400 and 300 meters, I'm a good enough shot to keep lasers "on target", and I am patient enough to wait for the good shot. So, a 4x Large Laser build works for me. My latest build backs those up with an LB-10x; chosen for the number of slots it takes up. It allowed me to shove in one more DHS. An UAC5 left me with tonnage I would have had to buy a new engine to use. Plus, the LBX generates 2 heat; so is a good cool down weapon. But the large lasers are the main punch.
My lancemate and I have also ran the 4xPPC 1xGauss build. It is devastating as Mech-Killer in the right hands. And by that I don't mean "play better" or anything; but it takes the right approach and mind-set to pull off well. And great aim with abundant patience. Works best when he has a screening element to back him up and take advantage of the holes he makes in mechs.
I have wanted to make a 4x Large Pulse version with the new heat levels. I like me my LPLs. Could make for a brutal brawler with a 40 point scalpel.
Another option is to find middle ground. 2 PPCs, 1 Gauss, and then 2 Medium Pulse Lasers for in close. You are still throwing out a good amount of ranged punch, with longer sustained fire. Then you have something when a light gets in close if you can drive smart. Might even have room for an SRM pack.
It all comes down to play style and what you are good at.

If you are playing the RS to master your D-DC, then I suggest you do the same build as the D-DC, minus a SRM launcher, and plus 2 more energy (I think 4 mediums is fine, using 4 larges makes it hard to do much else with it, and med pulses aren't usually worth it). If you are trying the RS Atlas and not liking it, and you already have an Atlas you like, just get rid of it, no reason to look for diamonds when you already have them. If you want to expand your playstyle and try new things. Just ignore the missiles/light LRMs and do some long range PPC/LL+perhaps ballistic.

Already have 100k+ exp on my d-dc, and 2 medium lasers don't seem to make up for the lost punch of the third srm launcher while brawling
Starting the grind for an Atlas-D so I can master my first chassis.

You'll like the D if you like the DDC. 4ML 2SRM6 Artemis and 2UAC5 is actually better than a DDC w/2ML 3SRM6 and 2UAC5... you just don't get ECM. But ECM really was more for your team than yourself as an Atlas.

And I suppose that really sums it up, actually. The RS is not a brawler chassis save for the LPL build. It's a close support build. A bigger Awesome.

Okay, so it's pretty much a joke build, but you CAN use those four ERPPCs quite effectively while you're still alive.
