Total Cost:

Bought:

XL 340: 5,553,333
Endo Steel: 750,000
Double Heat Sinks: 1,500,000
2X ER PPC: 600,000
1X PPC: 400,000

Total: 13,585,286

Sold:
XL 280: 2,286,667
LBX10: 400,000
Ultra AC5: 200,000

Total:
2,886,667

Total Cost:
10,698,619

Synopsis:

Note: The premium stacks with cadet bonus!

I started playing in a trail mech and the best one to pick was obiously the Catapult K2. The mech was a good fire support mech ( Good as in best of the worst they had to offer ). With the cadet bonus I was making around 600,000 to 700,000 per match and it gets progressively less within 25 matches.

I lost most of my matches playing in a trial, but that didn't matter because cadet bonus and premium made it worth playing because of massive C-Bill gains.

By brutaly grinding my way (NOT SUICIDING BUT LEGITLY PLAYING!) though the trial mechs, I spent about 18 matches to earn enough for a CTF-3D and paid for Double Heat Sinks, 2 ER PPC, PPC and sold the rest of what ever is valuable.
To grind my way to a really decent mech that packs a punch, it cost me about 3 hours of grinding incluidng a break here and there. This was the deadly blow for me. Three hours of being destroyed by 4 mans and extremely better mechs.

3 Hours in:

Now I have a decent mech to play with and my damage has substantly increased and so have my survivalbility, but the mech is not complete. I still need XL 340 and Endo Steel to complete the build. I only have about 7 matches left of cadet bonus. After all that I made about 2 Million C bills. I still need about 1 Million so I played for another 8 matches or so and got myself the XL 340.

The grind is much better because I got a mech I loved to play. I am now able to defend for myself and able to contribute to my pub team. I had some really intense matches and some crappy losses, but that is pug life.

Conclusion/ TL;DR:

So to get a competitive complete first heavy mech it cost me 25 rounds with cadet bonus + premium and 8 rounds with premium. That comes out to 33 rounds. That is just about 5 and a half hours with breaks in between.

So the best time to start is having a a day of premium and at least 4 hours to grind though your 25 matches of cadet bonus.

So if I didn't have premium this process will take 50% longer because of premium time bonus.

Dude...

just.... I don't even know how to explain how silly this 'attempt at learning about the new player' experience is.

So all i'm going to ask is..

Do you even lift bro?

These guys have a point though. Broceratops tried this as well. The trial mech part sucks hard, even for Broceratops. It's good after that, but they need to do something about frontloading the experience with suck.

I think the point is since you already know how to play and didn't have to spend several weeks digging on the forums for information because there is none in game, or posting newbie questions to be told "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION", etc, that you have no idea wtf you're talking about.

You don't really though. You have already learned how to play and how to do thing efficiently. A new player comes in and it feels like they are beating their head into a brick wall because of the learning curve. That hampers their experience and their income.

Yes, he was just explaining the new player experience. He wasn't actually saying he was new.

Maybe but Broceratops prefers to blame the trial mechs.

Wise words. To many people it wont matter how good the game gets once you have your own mech (cause they will never know) if it sucks for the first 2-5 hours.

A worthy experiment.

I encourage you to replicate the process after matchmaking phase 3 (maybe give it a week to settle in) and compare the experience before and after MM Phase 3.

Well kinda...

You still know the commands, how to play, what mech to take once you got your money and how to upgrade it. Do you think your first mech would have been Cataph if you never played the game before? I started a account for my son and did the same thing... but its still alot diffrent for someone who has never played before.

Edit: damn like 10 post saying the same thing as me while I was posting this... guess I need to type faster :)

It's good you came into the game without knowing how it works, or being crippled by the lack of documentation.
Oh, wait.

I will! I have an extra account with 1 day premium that has not been activated yet! I will attempt to play again when matching making 3 has settled. Probably a month or 2 after match making 3!

Well I wouldn't wait a month, just don't try it on tuesday.

Of course, everyone's Elo has already been tracked since the last patch, so when the new MM goes live we will have already been stratified based on the past two weeks' performance.

A truly new player would have bought a HBK-4SP because the forums told him too. Then he would put ferro-fibrous armor on it so he won't "die as fast." Next comes ER large lasers and LRM5s because he isn't comfortable in a brawl yet. He doesn't know the maps well enough to get anything out of that build, so he adds artemis to it, and maybe a TAG if he's checked the forums again. Now the cadet bonus is gone, and all he can do is rant on the forums about getting rolled by pre-mades. That's the new user experience.
