You carry mixed ranges, like 2 large lasers and an AC20 for instance. Or PPCs and SRMs.

Thank god there is finally something to reign in short range specialists.

This is by the way a great + for people who like balistics like me. The range profile is very good for changing situations (maps).

Alpine is the first of the maps large enough for 12v12. Eventually we should be running all maps around Alpine's size with 12v12 teams. They have to transition somehow. Beta is beta.

[size=4]

I think the OP has raised a legitimate concern to be honest.

The thing is, justifying large/small maps being in a rotation where you don't know what map is coming up next by saying that [size=4]this will force everyone to take "balanced" builds, which mix short/medium/long range, is really forcing people to play in a certain way. People don't like that.

Some people don't like that. Mostly people that want to build specialized mechs. You don't have to build a mech that is effective at every range but if you build a 40 kph short range mech that can't take advantage of cover expect to get stripped naked before you can get a single shot off.

Hard to drive a stalker with 2x LRM 10 2x LL and 3x ML and 1x Tag and 2x SRM 6

Easy to drive stalker with 5x SRM 6 + 4x MLaser

You can still specialize very well, it only punishes ridiculous builds like the splatcat.
And people need to realize that piloting a walking 40km/h turret is not such a good idea. Speed is life.

If only we had some sort of lobby system that let us know what map we were going to be on, so we could select one of our available mechs with that information in mind...

Nice~! Randomly selected map that is 90% long range . So if people use srms like me i just stay in place and weit behind the corner hole round

Smart choice there

If i do use balanced build like 4srm and 4 lasers i will still loose to random lrm player on that map
larger maps are a good thing as it will finally force some to have to build more well balanced ranged mech and not just relying on all these boating close quarters builds because they have gotten used to these messed up small maps that don't call for tactics what so ever. I gladly welcome larger maps that call for tactics. Keep them coming PGI.

Oh my god you mean map variety has killed your ability to boat the same gimmicky fit all day long? Oh no!

If you put as much effort into fitting your mech to maximize versatility as you put into whining, you'd be doing better.

I'm agreeing with zvero - get a screenshot!

Honestly Ive only played the new map once so far... and I LOVE IT, it feels like Mech Warrior finally. ECM's still make it a littler harder than it should be but w/e. Though it is pretty unfortunate making a build for the other maps, then getting thrown randomly into the alpines and being ill equipped for such range. Would be nice for some warning on what map you are going to play.

Wow, the number of people being outright Richards in this thread is phenomenal.

I did not read splatcat in the original post, but it appears a good number of people autowhine that subject whenever possible.

And what? Miss the luck of the Gods of Random when playing?. No way!
Hell I would like a random mech picker also on day. Spice it up.
Speaking of which, anyone know if we will get a PVE component to this game?

I was running gauss since day one, and nothing's really changed, except that it's completely impossible to brawl on alpine.

Deal with it.
