The Golden BB.

My friend had dumped nearly all his points into his custom Uber Mech which could only be described as an ultra assault mech. The beast was so slow it took the entire game to get across the map... After I finally getting up enough courage to attempt a shot on him, my AC scored a critical hit on his head blowing it completely off. It was the first shot of the game as well as the last shot of the game.

One shot, one kill. Needless to say he was absolutely furious.

My friends and I were teaching his girlfriend how to play Battletech, and we gave her a Grizzly. We ourselves took lights, specifically a 950-D Hussar and a Jenner D (the really light, explodey one). The idea in this had been she was just going to pound the living Hell out of us so she would like the game.

BUUUTT...

For those of you who don't know, the 950-D Hussar has a snub-nosed PPC. First round into the game, I ran up to the Grizzly and managed to land a PPC hit... to the head. She missed with everything save for a medium laser to my arm. The Jenner hit with 5 out of its six SRMs... One of which went to the head. And just like that, two lights took out a Clan heavy in one round.

She hasn't played with us since.

Opening round, needed to roll 12's to hit an Assassin with 2 LRM 15's at max range from a Trebuchet (intro box basics). First roll, 12 to hit,12 for all 20 missiles, then rolled all 7's to devastate the poor ******** center torso. Second roll, complete copy of the first roll. BOOM! Of course i didn't roll anything over a 3 after that for a few rounds.

WOW - now this dredges up some old memories, and I mean old :) . My first games of Battletech are my most memorable even though they were almost 30 years ago, I still remember being introduced to a relatively new board game that used cardboard standups with images of mechs on them, this would have been circa 1985-86 and the rest is history. As for any one particular moment - there's too many to choose from and I suppose thats what I find enduring.

I've been a keen Battletech fan ever since and, even though I quit miniatures gaming years ago, recently purchased the belated 25th Anniversary Edition for the gaming cupboard - It even has pride of place alongside some classics such as Scrabble, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit. I may even get back into minis after a 10 year hiatus due to this old favorite - It shouldn't be hard convincing the missus as shes a Battletech fan as well and used to play the old 90s Virtual World Simulators.

My favorite TT moment was in the megamek servers, but I still say it counts. One rule on that server is you could use regular ACs like more jam-prone ultra.

During a training match in a city I was fielding 3 Urbies (all AC10 models) and a stinger. My oponent had a firestarter and 3 other bug mechs. I forget which. Towards the end of the match, it was a near pristine urbie and my busted up stinger versus a busted (armless) firstarter. I had jumped up my remaining urbie onto a level 2 building, then up onto a two hex wide level 4 building. My stinger slipped during movement and was out of play for the turn. So he went for a DFA against my urbie.

Urbie fired two shots, blows off a leg and destroys one of the torsos of the firestarter. Fiurestarter fails the DFA, but my urbie got displaced off the side of the building. The fall completely trashed my urbie (ammo explosion). So I always had this image of a one legged carcass of the firestarter flailing into the urbie and sending it careening off the building.

My best was against my friend and we was doing a kind of campaign. Clan vs Sphere at the start of the invasion and his mechs were chasing down some retreating damaged mechs that were also leading them towards reinforcements.

His biggest mech a rather nasty customised Warhawk was doing its usual thing. Raping anything it pointed its guns at. Simple conversion too. Swap out 2 x ER PPCs for two large pulse lasers and you had a mech that had massive long range firepower with (barely) managable heat. That was leading a star including a 'stock' Timberwolf, a Mad Dog B and two lights.

One of my damaged mechs, a one armed rifleman was the 'lead' mech of the retreating ones rotated its arm to fire backwards and walloped the Warhawk in the face with both the AC-5 and Large laser, I was just stupidly lucky with my rolls :s Didn't score any hits and blew the things cockpit out. Sure next turn the Timberwolf obliterated the Rifleman with its LRMs and ER large lasers but it was worth it!

Another battle I had a Berserker, rolled a fail on its MASC first time I used it by my friend said 'nah that didn't count, just say he fell over, and can try getting up next turn'. He went on to regret it. The 'zerk killed his modified Timberwolf with its hatchet and a kick and some random medium, I think it was a Nova. So damn long ago that I can't remember exactly.

My most memorable moment happened years and years ago. We had been using level 3 rules for a couple of weeks, and I decided to do a bit of research.

Anyhow, the day arrived and we started to play on opposite sides of a huge hill hex map. Neither of us had line of sight to each other, so I switched for the first time to seismic sensors... and proceeded to attempt to gain a lock on on my friends mech over the other side of the hill. ANYHOW... the argument raged on and on for about an hour, as to whether this was a valid tactic, but after taking him through the rules, and how it all worked, finally managed to get him to agree, that this was a level 3 rule that could be used.

So I need an 8 to achieve a lock on so as to attempt to fire my LRMS indirectly over the hill.

I roll a 3...

What a waste of an hour... and of days of research...

I won't say it was my best moment but it was one of my most funny ones. We were playing a campaing where 2 of my friends had to take a munitions/parts depot and to steal some tech from odd pirates. the pirates were a small kingdom founded after the exodus so they were not under manned like most pirate units. They were trying to get them to basically gain intelligence on what kind of tech and maybe information on where they are based from.

So yea. Crusdader runs down the road. turns and ... you guessed it skids ... down the road still standing BUT slam into one of the munitions warehouses back first. left torso breached. lrm ammo goes up. mg ammo goes up .. check for engine breach .. YOU GUESSED IT .. STACKPOLE. check warehouse's construction factor. check listed stores for said warehouse. let's just say 4 other buildings went up along with the crusader.

Now for my best moment. Someone was running a bring anything mech fight at a convetion. 1 unit custom build it. (with current rules). I looked at the map and saw a nice large lake even in it. So yea i had to be "that guy" showed the judge my unit and he laughed then told me what hex i would start in and kept my mini off the table (in the lake). i moved arround for 3 turns under water and set myself up. waited a bit more probably 4-5 more turns till people got into it mixed up. arround turn 10ish is when i revealed myself. Surface Surface Surface. yep not only a sub but max weight sub carrying SRT/LRT and arrow IV launchers (some lrms also). needless to say people's jaws dropped when the arrow IV's flew. Ofcourse i named it Red October. 2 guys decided they needed to try take it out .. one 95 tonner and a 55 tonner. I never saw a 95 tonner try run out of the water so fast before. the 55 tonner litteraly imploded when i hit it with the SRT's.

We have had loads fo great moments

.A damaged ryoken dropping a pristine berserker with 2 floating gyro crits the moemtn it arrives.
.A devestator getting hit in the head twice by a kodiak's AC20 the very frist time it hits the table.
.My blood kite getting endlessly headcapped(seriously i think it is fate).

Best of all-
we were doing a scenerio mission i believe it was from the HTP misery campaign-

17 dead mechs from dasy chain ammo explosions....all in one turn, i still have the pictures.

Oh quite a few years ago, 10 or so I was playing a match against a buddy of mine. Me FedCom combined forces versus his Jade Falcon force. I made a dumb move with a MAD5S Marauder and crested a ridge... unfortunately I could not get the rest of my forces up there (Company Mechs + Light Vehicle Lance vs 2 Stars) and he Alpha'd my poor Marauder, firing something like 40 weapons at it. Missed with almost everything (needing 6 and up) and barely scratched my armor. Figured I'll return fire! Fired everything I had at his Turkina B (I hate them so much. Caused me much pain in previous matches) Needed something 10s to hit with the big guns and ended up only hitting with the Gauss Rifle. Location came up a floating critical. My chance to cripple him! Bam head hit! Another Clanner head sheared off thanks to Gauss Inc. Took it as a prize at the end of the battle.

A few months ago i tried out a lance that was made up of 2 amazing 6/9 LBX20 Hunchback, Griffen with the light engine, erppc and lrm15, and a Lao-Hu (5/8 lbx20 lrm15).

First round, i rush up with the hunbacks (what else would you do with 6/9 hunchies??). 2 Cluster(for the -1) shots to the Warhammer that didnt move, 1 hit, the other missed, the one that did hit, i rolled like hell for the amount, got like 3 slugs. I rolled Snake eyes, Rolled the crit, got it, hit the ammo in the CT. Dead Warhammer in first turn.

Different game, Catapult C5-A (4/6/4 std engine, 4 ermediums, 2 lrm15 with artemis). My opponent had 3 mechs shooting for at least 5 rounds, I won the game, and the catapult had no external armor left whatsoever. But still had i think 1 lrm 15, and the 4 lasers. I use that catapult almost every game now cause of that.

I have a pair one good, one bad.

We'll do the bad one first, This is under BMRr rules, fairly basic when it comes to options. I got lucky with my terrain placement and had a nice hill with fairly open terrain for my heavy and assault second line clan star against some IS merc company paid to retake the world (was actually a 3 battle series of a trinary and some odd mix ins against about a reinforced battalion.) I walk up first round into partial cover I put the warhammer IIC in light woods with partial cover, I have the bane in partial cover. A bowman2 and a grizzly were there though I forget which one of them had heavy woods and no cover and which had partial cover. I also had the commanders Loki C hidden behind the hill. Zell wasn't in effect as they had used dishonorable tactics in the first battle and this was the second, they had also had some swarm missiles so I wasn't right next to each other with mechs. I'm licking my chops thinking I got this easily. I'm fighting a company of lvl 1 3025 mechs with some lvl 2 field refits. Mostly unremarkable heavies and mediums. I open up that round with my bane and for some reason I decide I'm going to fire 2 of my ac2s in ultra mode wouldn't you know both of those roll 2 and jam. Next round only the bane and an er large have range so I put 2 more into ultra as I haven't moved and I'm trying to crit seek, miss with everything and jam those 2 ultras. So anyways they run forward this turn and a bunch of stuff is in range including some of their lrms. I've got a bane with 4 jammed ultra 2's and only 2 over heat with medium range, I need like 7's to hit. They need 11s and 12s. My erppcs need around 9s and everything else is pretty much at least a couple of guns in range. Their one mech that used masc was right at 15, it hits with tag on a 12 on the warhammer. The warhammer takes a long tom copperhead round from the dropship, all center torso and a number of lrm racks from the various mechs they have. Gets engined out. The Bowman eats a IS erppc to the face, roll crit sensor hit. Then I roll for the Bane, 2,2,2,2,4,2. End round. I have at round 4 of a battle closes mech is at 15 range and most are around 2. I am down a warhammer IIC to about 55 points of damage total, I have a useless bowman to 10 points of damage, and a bane with one uac2 and some mgs left, The grizzly and the hell bringer are fine. He runs forward again encountering some rough terrain, so most of his stuff is still at long range. I fire the UAC2 on the bane right off 2. At that point I just surrender. The bane had jammed everything on it in 4 rounds of firing and had hit with a grand total of 3 ac2 rounds. I know I probably should have stopped with the ultra but I figured I couldn't keep rolling 2's like that.

To hit my opponent hit with a 12 on the tag, Hit with 3 out of 4 lrm racks on 7's rolled the same location as the long tom round 3 times got crits with 3 of those one a multi crit and took out the engine and a gyro. He rolls an 11 to hit the bowman and then gets head on location. Meanwhile I'm firing roughly 6 times the number of rolls, on much lower numbers and I manage to do around 65 points of armour damage and make one of my mechs completely useless.

The other one was part of a campaign where both sides had about a mixed battalion, We were playing late succession wars out on the periphery somewhere story was sorta vague. Anyway both of us managed to get our recon lances tangled with each other on a flat plain with scattered light woods. Each side had 3 bug mechs, with a commander one in a spider, one in a mirage (firestarter). It was great fun this one battle went on for something like 3 days real time though we were probably only playing 3 or 4 hours per day, mostly missing, and hitting just enough to be interesting. Its sort of amazing how much damage a 20 tonner can really take when its just medium lasers critting nothing of real importance. Anyway this went on for something like 62 rounds and we actually ran a stiener locust out of ammo.

well, I'd have to say my favorite memory was last night...playing on a MegaMekNet server (Mekwars 3025 era). So nothing fancy maybe a few good pulls out of the factories. anyways I've lost just about every game i've played on there but decide to keep playing...I take a patrol lance of a RFL-4D, CN-9A, QKD-5A (tons of ML and the sinks to back them up) and a HCT. he fields a HnR lance of a GRF, SHD, PHX, and JR-7D. First few turns we begin jockeying and get some long range shots in. One LRM5 (from his SHD) gets a thru armor on my HCT. Engine hit. so i relegate him to back watching. next turn his jenner runs in on my RFL, saying screw the heat I toggle both PPCs and let fly, need 10s, 1 connects and strips the JR-7Ds CT. he ducks it off next turn but focuses on my RFL...long story short the RFL falls and cant get back up. during this time (about 3 or 4 rounds) i manage to down his shd with leg shots and the AC-10s on my HCT and CN, using my QKD as bait. his GRF backs off laying down PPC fire the whole time. I give chase with my CN-9A and work his legs some. then turn my attention to his PHX. Pixies being what they are are notoriously hard to hit. he gets around back of my CN-9A for the firing phase. I torso twist the CN and pull the trigger on the AC-10....BOOM headshot...with only 9 points of armor and crits the PHX crashes to the ground dead. By now I've lost my HCT to legging from his JR-7D...but not before cleaving off one its arms with the AC-10. final round: my QKD has his GRF cornered in some woods. my QKDs paper armor is torn and split just about everywhere with 2 engine crits and several missing heat sinks as i face off against his better armored GRF with the JR-7D slightly above and behind my QKD. my CN-9 is at long range on his AC-10 and mid range for his LRM-10 on the JR-7D...he lets fly with both, connecting with 7 missles to sever the JR-7's other arm. my QKD blasts away with its 2 rear mounted ML at the jenner hitting its gyro thru the CT and missing with the other...his GRF fires PPC and misses...my QKD fires 3 ML ahead with the SRM4 for crit seeking. 2 ML hit and i manage to land 2 srms on his torso. one shreds the last of his armor over the RT. melee time! both the jenner and the griffin kick at my QKD who kicks the GRF back...i lose my leg, he fails his PSR from being kicked...i won for BV destroyed (knocking out the JR-7Ds MLs won it for me) my QKD was recovered by me but he got my HCT...

I’ve had a couple of good games but my favorite was a Solaris final at my flgs a few years ago. It was down to three of us chasing each other around a 7 story tall factory tower. There was a battered hatchetman at ground level, a griffin that had lost it’s er ppc, and my Wolverine 7K running low on armor.

I had chased the griffin to the top of the tower the previous turn but then lost initiative. In what would end up being the last turn, the griffin charged me in a 4 hex desperation move. I unloaded, but failed to kill the griffin before the physical phase. He hit the charge and shredded most of my remaining armor and structure but failed to kill me. On the other hand the return damage managed to crit the griffin’s torso and light off the remaining lrm ammo. I was about to have a good laugh about him killing himself before I remembered that the successful charge displaced me back one hex…….right off a level 7 tower.

Remember that hatchetman I mentioned? Guess where he was standing. That’s right, directly under me. I rolled the hit and slammed into the hatchetman, doing 42 points on the punch table and taking the same to my back. Unsurprisingly, neither of us survived. We decided to credit the griffin with all three kills and a crowd goes wild bonus. We figured the pilot could celebrate his victory from his hospital bed.

Best Battletech moment was when me and a bunch of friends were playing and one of my friend's Mechs was hit in the head or overheated (not killed) and the pilot failed his conciousness roll. I think it was his last mech (Battlemaster, I believe) and he wanted to do something before he died. We said if you can roll two twelves (on 2d6 of course), you'll fall on the fire button and hit another mech in the head with your PPC (I forget what the other mech was and whether it was the last mech for the other person)... Of course, he rolled two twelves and killed one other mech before he dropped.

The only other one I can remember was when we tried to have an epic battle with like 30+ cardboard maps spread out over the floor in our attic and each person picked from all of our metal miniatures (over 100) split up into each of the five houses battling for one planet... to make a long story short (too late), I don't even think we made it through the first round because it took us hours to pick mechs, assign pilots, set up, and probably hours to move, fire, etc. through 100+ mechs.

I've got two actually...

First was one of my very first times playing the game, years back. It was at a small convention at my community college, and we actually had both Randall Bills and Loren Coleman show up (the first wrote much of the rule book, the second wrote a lot of great novels in the series). We were doing WoB vs Clan Jade Falcon I believe. I was in a Hellbringer (Loki) A Variant, and had lost my right torso with the LRM 20 and the pair of machine guns. I decided it was a good time to dump the ton of machine gun ammo that was in my center torso, as I no longer had anything to shoot it with, and who the heck puts ammunition in the center torso anyways? At any rate, I start dumping ammo and manage to weather another round of fire, though I'm forced to make a piloting skill roll because I've taken my 20 points of damage. I fail. I then roll which direction I fall, and end up landing on my back right on the ammo as it comes out the back of my mech. Randall and Loren had shocked faces and Randall had to look up in the rule book he had a major hand in creating what happens. Short story, things did not end well for that Loki. Was a great moment, even if I lost the mech the whole table had a good laugh.

Well I have a similar experience with the whole ammo in the CT thing. See at our local gaming store we had a guy who was notorious for absurd things happening to him.

This match he was in an Atlas. One with machine gun ammo in the center torso. On his very first turn he decides to walk into water and submerge himself in order to proceed down the map under water and "play it safe" and not get shot at. Apparently the school of fish, shark, or other aquatic life form had different ideas, and he fails his piloting skill roll for entering water. He then falls onto his back, rolling snake eyes for location and then proceeds to detonate his machine gun ammo from the resulting critical hit.

The very next game the first shot fired at him in his assault 'mech was from some hidden infantry with an SRM launcher and hit. We use the floating critcals rule, and the dice decide to roll snake eyes again, then followed quickly by box cars (six on both dice) so it goes to the head with a chance to cricital. For the critical roll they land box cars again resulting in head/limb blown off. Needless to say he sat out two very long games of battletech that night.

Not necessarily the best moment, but it was hilarious.

8 of us spent 3 weeks hashing out a clan vs is battle in a buds basement laid out on 4, 4x8 sheets of plywood. We, the IS let them pick, set up terrain. They let us pick the #of battle points we would play with.
With our modifer for being IS my team thought we had a huge advantage so we got it clairifed several times during the weeks prior.
They let us use everything we wanted, mines, pre-placed reinforcements that could not be activated untill certain turns depending on die rolls, as well as those that we must declare on hidden sheets as to the direction these would enter the board from during other turns, ect, ect.
well, after 6 or 7 hours (what we call the end of turn 1) being devastated by our mines, mechs and die rolls that had many many of our pre placed reinforcements activating at the start of movement phase2. They quit in a huff that there was no way we could have done this in 2 turns, our battle points must be wrong. Remember we hashed that out over 2 weeks ahead and tried to tell them but no....
they quit in a huff, and that was the last game any of us has played.
I am sure every one has had games go bad due to rule lawyers interpreting things differently, where any wiggle room was found. and no matter what side of I was ever on, my offer was always to flip a coin and continue. but that day soured me forever on pplaying any more with the guys that got me into the game. my 80 some odd hand painted figures are in a box in the closet....wow, over 10 years now.

My brother had Battletech, Areospace, Battletroops. We played a planet invasion from moon staging just like the PC game cept we never had to take the moon to begin. Was freaking huge nothing like losing a dropship having it burn up in atmo.

Best ever moment was when we played a duel with a Marauder vs a Warhammer being very similar they chewed each other up very similarly and we both landed criticals on each others reactors and exploded. It was so long ago can't remember if that is even possible but that's just what I remember happening.

I only started playing TT this past week with a buddy of mine. But we had an awesome moment where his Atlas cornered my spider. The spider attempted a DFA, but the Atlas sidestepped and he landed on his face. My buddy then proceded to Pile-drive my Spider into teh ground with his Atlas. We rolled it as a DFA without the Jumping penalty, then rolled a falling damage against the Atlas' right side. It was pretty amazing. It took him two turns to stand up. And the same turn he finally stood up my Awesome sniped his head off with a ppc from 14 spaces away. I then proceded to clean house.

I think that was my second TT game ever.

Shot the face off a Madcat mkii, turn one, gauss cannon at long range, as you might imagine. Possibly even the first rolls of the match.

I have never let my friend forget it. Though I'm pretty sure he won the game.
But neither of us can remember silly little details like who actually won.

May have more to do with the fact we were playing in the pub than anything else....
