Nevertheless, I do not feel that in gameplay a 50-ton Centurion or Trebuchet should be the same size as an 80-ton Awesome or 85-ton Stalker, or taller than a 70-ton Cataphract, for aesthetic and flavour reasons. Not to mention the added functional vulnerability of decreased armour.

lucky for you the awesome doesn't weigh 80 tons.
nor does the centurion weigh 50, nor does the cataphract weigh 70.

the actual weight of the mech without armor, engine, weapons and ammo is 1/10th of it's total maximum weight.

awesome really weighs 8 tons, cent weighs 5. cataphract - 7 tons.
go to smurfy's mechlab and try this out.

their maximum tonnage is how much they can carry.
sometimes components are mostly empty like the ears of the catapult. so you can't make bold assumptions

don't let your "feelings" get in the way

Is it... density of materials? :P

armor thickness / density.. also u have to think about length / width and the size / shape of the lower hull... the m60 has a more boat like lower hull while an abrahms is more squarish and wider i think.. the abrahms has a bigger engine compartment for the turbine and tranny, it also has a wider turret with a bigger bustle.

The "Wafer" I mean treb is Shaped like Spounge Bob. Sideways its almost invisible. The hunch is like a friggin chubby gnome. The cent all Chest conan style. Its so simple. I'm 5'5 170lbs and my buddy is 6'0 170. How can that be.

Hell I'm half waiting for my Treb to transform into a casettes and jump into the atlas chest.

So the issue stands that mechs that with the same weight (5 tons for a stripped Centurion, 5 tons for Hunchback) can have wildly different sizes, while other mechs (Trebuchet), whether empty or fully loaded, are still comparable size to a mech 160% their weight (Awesome, whether you're comparing 5 tons to 8, or 50 to 80).

Not to mention that weapons take up different amount of room depending on the chassis for some reason (K2 gauss/PPC vs Raven gauss/PPC vs Atlas gauss/PPC), which is a whole other can of worms.

Then of course, there are official guidelines on relative mech sizes, displaying average height per weight category. Meanwhile we have mediums as tall as assault mechs. Something is amiss on both balance and canon fronts.
