The question is, if you had a splat cat why would you choose to play a large map? If you were an LRM boat why would you pick to play a map with a lot of cover?
You wouldn't.
So if we had the ability to pick what map we wanted, it would always be a map that favored our mech build. So whenever you dropped on Alpine it would be nothing but snipers and LRM boats, what fun would that be?
If you want to see mech diversity you cannot let people pick what maps they want to play.

I love lore behind Battletech and Mechwarrior. If i wanted a game to just ride a robot and shoot other robots in the face i woulda gone to Hawken, but being able to fantasize about being on the battlefields of 3050 as a mechwarrior has kept me right here, and constantly pulling me back in.
I really hate the fact that you can customize your mech to such ridiculous degrees: guass kitties being a prime example. I find it very difficult to believe that the engineers in your mech bay could find a way to fit a guass rifle where a machine gun was supposed go. I hate the idea that you could choose the battlefield you want to fight on, as that favors people specializing and only playing on certain maps. That's not the way that fighting in Battletech works (at least for the most part) as outfitting and changing your mech is a very costly and time consuming project. Most mechwarriors had to use what they where given, as they didnt have the rank/money to do anything to their mechs, and the majority of companies, merc or otherwise, were comprised of mostly stock variants (correct me if im wrong please lol). Im done with cheese builds that wouldnt ever see the light of day on a real battlefield.
When PGI was first talking about this game, and the only one's around where diehard battletech fans who had been waiting a decade for a new Mechwarrior game, they said that they wanted to stick with canon as close as possible. I want to see a MWO that makes me feel like im a mechwarrior on the battlefields of the future, and not feel like i'm a mechwarrior in the middle of a bunch of cheese splatcats and poptarts. Please dont flame me for this, i just wanted to put my thoughts out for anyone who would listen, and I hope MWO can become the game i've wanted it to be, instead of heading down the path of 3rd person and pick-a-map.

If this was single player, then the game would be scripted with a STORY and that would make sense to not know where you'll drop - IF in fact that is part of the story.
This is a multiplayer only simulation game - ON THE PC. Being able to select the map should have been in the game FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
THIS IS NOT A SINGLE PLAYER - STORY DRIVEN GAME!

i know its random but geeee...felt bored. not even one forrest map...and the new map is rather a lottery to get.

Why shouldn't anyone of us be able to select/deselect particular maps?
Crimany, why shouldn't anyone of us be able to setup an 'exclude' or 'avoid' in match making to avoid certain people?
Sure, sure, there'll be the few that select ONE particular map to play in so that they can play their favorite cheese build over and over, but so what? Even the most dense of personality will become bored and either move on to a different game or start making different selections.
As far as lore is concerned, I know for a fact many books and game modules have instances where IS 'mechs were modified before a particular battle because certain specific factors about the battle locations were known prior to being sent out to the battle.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... In lore no one person had access to dozens of 'mechs, nor could the afford access to 100% of all available technology, 100% of the time, but... So the **** what?!?!
If I NEVER wanted to play River City - Night again (and I don't) it's not game breaking or anything to allow me to "unselect" it in the map rotation.
We certainly aren't forced to "ANY" battle mode. We get to choose which we prefer there. We also get to chose from up to 4 different trial 'mechs, different every week, or to purchase and/or modify our own 'mechs. We're not forced to only one...
Crimany, if you're so worried about what 'mech warriors could and couldn't do in lore, why the hell aren't you petitioning to have everyone's 'mech lab reduced to ONE 'mech with ZERO modifications allowed?
You people have an incredibly conflicting and schizophrenic view point when it comes to this game, it has absolutely got me irate...

It is totally BT canon for a mech to be able to equip anything that fits within it's tonnage without a change in the difficulty to hit it. The Gauss on the Hollander's RT (which seems as large as the mech itself!) is no easier to hit than any other mech's RT.

I feel like a large part of this was directed at me. I'm not the community, so i dont want my words to be taken as such.
That being said, i know for a fact that there are a few people here who share my love of the battletech lore, and we are only here BECAUSE of the lore. Let me be honest when i say that, IMHO, MWO would be nothing without its rich background and history. If you trash the lore, then whats left? PGI might as well just update MW4 and make it shinny.
I personally would LOVE it if you could only have one mech at a time, a medium or light mech to start with, and have to rank up to earn new battlemechs to possibly pilot, or customization options specifically for light mechs, or mediums. IDK, i dont have all the answers, i just wanted to put my thoughts out there

and anyone that plays alpine for some time will want to play the others again...any map gets boring when you played it a lot.
another reason maybe for low end machines...f.e. from patch to patch caustic performance switches from fluid...to freezes 2-3sec all the time. if i could i would avoid caustic till they fixed this problem again as it was before. now i even get those freezes on river city night.
here the system could be useful to avoid mechs where you have troubles playing on, get lots of crashes etc...though this sure should not be the reson for the system to exist. but it would help me a lot.

Say for example that when if you received a chance to modify your 'mech you'd recieve, at most, 5 items. There should only be a one in 10,000 chance to upgrade engines as the fusion engine is THE MOST expensive and complex part of the battlemech to replace and modify.
Along the lines of IS warfare, CBILL rewards need to be SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. We're talking along the lines of receiving, at most 10,000CB for a victory, and absolutely nothing for a loss. I'm unaware of any losing force in lore being paid after being conquered. Perhaps house units would be, but for houses like Kurita or Liao, there should be a greater than 50% chance that your character would need to be rerolled, having all piloting skills and experienced gain completely reset to zero, as you'd be forced to commit sepeku, or executed sumarily for your failures and cowardice on the battlefield.
Also, if your 'mech is destroyed, there should be an 80% chance of total loss of the 'mech such that, unless the pilot has been able to amass enough money to purchase a new 'mech, he's also forced to delete his character, or continue logging in once a day for his one in 100,000 chance that he's received a replacement 'mech.
Finally, all the choices for battlemode must be reduced, and there should absolutely never be any option to be able to select a map, or select one's team mates.
The game should force everyone to play as IS warriors as documented in lore, period.
(By the way, if you've read all the way to the end, this is a FARCE, I in no way actually advocate this, but I'm hoping to generate some equivelant nay-saying posts from those who believe that the ability to select maps somehow 'breaks' the game from its lore roots. Anyway, have fun with it!)
So you guys really might want to reconsider your position on the simple option to having the ability to select which maps you prefer.

he short answer is no, not outright selection. However we are working on a "lobby" design called DropShip to allow players to bring in more than one mech to a match, along with some options to change camo specs, and upcoming <redacted>. We are exploring a voting system that allows matched players to chose a map to play on.

but how will pregame lobby (or even selecting multiple mechs) work when ELO is weight chassis specific. when players are already matched, whats to prevent everybody bringing ravens/assaults.
mechs should be locked before entering pregame lobby. so that the weight specific elo can still give assaults higher elo. before any matching occurs.
for dropship. maybe the average elo of the player's selected mechs.
