So what really needs to be added is a quick tutorial/test map where newbies can learn controls, spend a few seconds in 3rd person to understand that their legs move separately from their torso, and test out the various weapons on dummy targets for heat/damage/weapon type explanations.

Exactly. Because there's no substitute for actual practice. Seeing how all the weapons work would be of special significance to people who are not familiar with BT.

I was actually in a game with someone the other day who kept walking into walls. He complained in chat and said that the game "really needs 3rd person view", which was met with groans from the other players but thankfully no expletives. Personally, I couldn't tell if he was trolling or not. In any case, a training mode would be extremely helpful for new players.

That's knee jerk response to having your torso face one way and your legs another. Probably by someone who's never played a Mechwarrior game before. It's also understandable, but I'm sure they'd change their mind once they get their head around the concept and test it out WITHOUT being shot at or being a burden on their team.

Enough transformers jokes/references.
(Loved the show when I was young)

Stay on topic please!

As far as I know an offline training mode/map is in the making.

Oh I know it's in the making, my hope is that it gets bumped up the list to 'Must Have'.

Trying to get my friends into MWO, but sadly, they need new machines to get up to spec.

Frankly, that and the ELO patch should have been prioritized to get out before the ad campaign. But seeing as that bridge has been crossed, there's no point in not adding in other things that could keep their customers from falling off the skill curve and never coming back :-/

Both proper matchmaking and training areas are essential to attracting casual players, without whom this game will cease to exist. The matchmaking should keep the newbs separate from the vets so that both parties don't find their fun diminished. Hopefully MM3 is doing some of that already.

If I could somehow warp reality, I would have preferred both MM3 and Training Grounds to have been in the game before Open Beta.

I just checked the Feature Roadmap, and it says New User Flow is scheduled for mid February. This is obviously incorrect, but it also states that New User Flow requires Achievements, which are (according to the same post) due in mid March. So it would appear that it is the next feature that they plan to roll out.

I'm a bit leery of going off of the Feature Roadmap because as you pointed out, things get moved around and/or delayed. Not entirely certain of why the achievement system and the new user flow are linked.

And I'm dismayed to find that the last and only post that directly references the New User Flow is from 31st October.

So, once again a plea to the Devs to give this issue a high priority.

At the same time, there is a general lack of information about pretty much everything in the near future. Almost all of what has been discussed by the devs thus far (Elo, heat changes, PPC effect, netcode, etc) has now been implemented or will be shortly.

I know this is causing some people to rip out their optics with impatience and I feel the same way about the much-desired Community Warfare in particular, but perhaps soon the devs will finally decide to let slip whatever big reveal it is that they have planned and we will all get some nice juicy new info to mull over as whatever-it-is is designed and released.

This I find a little unlikely because AI is not easy to program, in fact from what I understand it's an entirely different kind of coding.

But yes, a man can indeed dream :D

I recall a couple months ago, one or more of the developers stated that it wasn't an impossibility to implement some kind of PvE or AI-based campaign. They'd need all sorts of nagging and prodding about it, though, I think. I'm pretty sure they also said they'd maybe consider looking into it after faction wars and clan invasion...so we'll be dreamin' for quite some time, but it's a dream that very well could come true!

After they get the tutorials in and all that, they should probably do a refer-a-friend scheme for C-bills or MC. Worked well for WoW.

Probably wouldn't work so well here because of F2P. You could create alternate accounts and refer yourself.

It would make more sense to say give you a day of free premium time for a referred friend's first MC purchase. Or something, just speculating here.

I don't think 3rd person needs to be added but I will say that spatial awareness in this game is pretty awful. You can get shot moving to cover without actually seeing who shot you simply because the FPS screen doesn't show how much of your mech is actually exposed.
