So my question is, how much damage is a spider supposed to do during a match?

Obviously, they generally can't, which is why the overall sentiment is that Spiders are terrible.

The short of it is that there are always people looking to blame their own shortcomings or bruised egos on others. 9/10 they are wrong or just plain ignorant. Just relax and be secure in the fact that nobody has any right to tell you how to play the the game... They will try but in the end it just make them look bad.

So, you just need to relax and not thing much about what people say. Do whatever you have fun doing in the game and you'll be fine...and be glad we're not a DotA style MOBA game 'cause then it would be SO much worse >_>

This, I think, is the crux of the issue. Unless you're winning by capping, or, I suppose, spotting for LRMs a LOT, everyone's job is the same - shoot the guys on the other team until they blow up.
My personal bench mark (as a medium mech driver, not that I necessarily believe that bigger mechs have an edge when it comes to putting damage on the board) is that <200 is bad and >400 is good.

The spider is a different animal. Right now the only variant that is even viable is the 5D, and that just barely. You need to be GOOD to get 200+ in a match. Until PGI fixes role warfare to include a viable role for the light chassis (and I have doubts about this) Spider-friends like us need to just filter out the noise. Oh, and ignore the Assault pilots in general. They will never know the pain of leveling 3 variants of light to unlock elite, 2 of which suck monkey shnutz. They just roll in their XP and CB for kills/component destruction like scrooge mc duck. In reality, they should be grateful that there are less cravin aficionados!

I can't help but agreeing. I mean it could obviously have been a streak of bad luck or something but personally I haven't seen any flaming or so for the 100 games or something (aside from the occasional "******* 3L").

Damage is overrated, I've seen Atlai ***** rounds all over, get 800 damage, no kills, hit their teammates with half the rounds, and ***** they did all the lifting and having ****** teamnates after getting killed. They were worthless for not focusing their fire on something and being a giant target.
Some of the best light pilots I've seen got 100 damage and caused all sorts of chaos running around the other team while we picked em off.

Well, no, there are - they're just not common situations. I would be prepared to argue that every build that is constructed without damage-dealing in mind is bad, but that not every time a pilot ends a match with low damage done, they have performed poorly.

welcome MWO
where nothing shows how good you are more than your damage, even if youre a scout and wont do damage.
