Mr. Stiggs:

If you could be so kind as to actually review the statement from the somethingawful forums that you have provided you will notice that the person you have kindly quoted mentions a vocal minority. Unless you're suggesting that everyone who posts is a part of the vocal minority, then you are sadly mistaken about the content and posting status of the fine men and women of this thread.

Your veiled insults will not work here, my friend.

Actually, I think you'll find more than a few of the Goon guys are going to end up banned before long, like a lot of them get in most games.

Rappo's already on his way to a perma-ban from his spamming and racism, and he's not the only one.

The sad thing is the Goon that Stiggz is quoting is kinda right. Let's face it, I've seen posts here on MWO made by non-Goons that would get probated for offensive material or low-quality content in a heartbeat (EDIT: On SomethingAwful, that is. The Goon forum has higher posting standards than most). "Spergwarrior" cuts deep because it swings true.

And let's face it, who wouldn't want to gang up on the Davions? They're almost as annoying as Clan players! The 2nd Donegal Guard Goon is actually totally a bro and doesn't actually lay claim to leadership of an actual in-universe unit, he's just a very enthusiastic Steiner fan. He's also twice as knowledgeable about anything Battletech lore-related than any random pub, roleplayer, or community veteran you can name. He's basically everything a Spergwarrior wishes he could be, except totally chill about things and doesn't even take his stuff all that seriously despite being the biggest Steiner fan on the SA forum.

This game does take some skill to play...you can't stand in the background and throw some spell or conjure up a horde of imps...you have to pilot a mech and play as a team to win...if a squad of goons can do that, it should make for some fun playing...

You'd be surprised how much mileage you can get out of a Teamspeak/Mumble channel were one guy is declaring primary targets to focus fire on. A little common sense goes a long way, and Goons, like all other organized groups, have our own communication and logistical infrastructure. Now whether any given Goonlance or Gooncompany is good or not, that's up for grabs.

Steiners for one shouldnt want to gang up on Davions. He should know this since he's knowledgable on the lore that they are allied with the Davions at this point in time. I would venture to say that most Battletech fans wouldnt want to gang up on any one house for lore reasons, and for the sheer unsportsman like attitude of it. Your a Goon and thinking like one, you cant really believe that the vast mojority of gamers thing as you do. I for one would like a challenge, and forming groups in all the Houses, stacking teh odds on my favor and suckerpunching one house is not what gets my rocks off, sorry.

To each his own.

Well let's be fair, he's speaking from a metaperspective that saw his house derailed by the writers with a cartoonishly evil villain because for over a decade and a half House Davion was never allowed to be wrong.

To say I'm thinking "like a Goon" is misinterpreting something much deeper.

I'm thinking like a guy who hates Mary Sues.

I wasnt commenting and what he said on the SA forums. I was commenting on what YOU said. You said, who wouldnt want to gang up on Davion and I answered.

Also I would venture to say that many people have had experience with goons in the past, be they forum trolls, in game griefers, ect ect. So when I mention, "thinking like a Goon" it is coming from my own perception and experience on how a goon brain works.

When the game goes live, and factional warfare begins, I fully expect lore to be tossed out the window and replaced with expediency. Given the level of animus generated by the generally "Pro-Davion" storyline, I fully expect there to be a mad rush to the door by all sides to stick it to the FedSuns. Quite frankly, if the players from all of the 4 remaining Successor States aren't allied against Davion, I'll be disappointed for a few moments.

Sorry if my using a humorous rhetorical question muddled the conversation, there's really no need to get confrontational there Stiggz. That said, House Davion is the most populous House precisely because the narrative is constantly bent over backwards to make sure they're the heroes whenever they get involved in something and they're hardly at risk of suffering a real defeat. In MPBT, it wasn't House Davion that was constantly short on numbers and always at risk of total annihilation. They're the big fish and everyone else is, playerbase-wise, an underdog compared to them.

Also, I'm not going to apologize about how other Goons have treated you in the past. The SomethingAwful community has over 160,000 registered members and there's little point in bearing the cross of a community that large. That said, consider that you're talking to at least a few Goons who are trying to keep the level of discourse on a casual and, dare I say it, humorously deflating track. Any anecdotal accusations (however true, and let's face it I've seen my fair share of situations where a troll was well deserved) made on the internet are a case of "he said, she said" wherever internet rumors and reputations are concerned, therefore I can only judge one's credibility based on one's own conduct. Now imagine someone without any preconceived notions re: Goons and The People Who Hate Goons, and imagine how your posts might read to this entirely fictional, theoretical person-construct.

So lighten up a little, lay off the bunker mentality, and enjoy talking about a game about giant robots that aren't technically autonomous and therefore not "robots" per se.

A hostile sort of attitude just begs to be tweaked.

EDIT: And possibly noogied.

Negative. Article XXI of the Ares Conventions prohibits this. At least in populated areas.

^^ This. For all the goon cheese, and craptastic tactics and metagaming, you still have to get it done 12v12. Like I said earlier, goons are just like any other premade group, nothing special aside from the metagaming.

Nothing more to see here.

More to the point, Goons are roughly on par with other premades like Night's Scorn and Death's Hand Brigade in terms of skill and coordination. And those guys are formidable.

I lean davion but if goonswarm wants to add some chaos and comedy to the game I’m all for it, it should keep the game from getting stale. As an added benefit whenever I see a cappie I can call him a troll, if he denies it I’ll make him recite the family tree of sun tzo to prove he’s a “real” cappellan. Besides it not like they can do any real damage with the rule enforced story line, and the fedcom borders a lot of noncapellan planets with less than competent defenders.

So anyone that doesn't know the Liao family tree is a troll?

Davion is the only swarm we are preparing for currently. After we take a bunch of their tasty real estate we can see who our enemies or allies are. Either way large groups joining MWO can only help the game succeed.

We will just take over everything like we did back in MPBT 3025. ;)
