our little locust swarm last night was incredibly fun.

to all the other crazy ******** in this thread..I highly recommend grouping up with us next time so we can get that long dreamed of 24 locust battle royale going...

How do I join the club? (I have to say I play from a vastly different time zone than most (12hrs from the US, in fact), so the timing might be weird for me. How do you add friends in the game, etc?

The button at the bottom of the game screen (looks kinda like three people standing near eachother... kinda)
One of the options under that menu is "Add Friend"

Click that and type the player's name in.

And reviewing the first post:
As per the the opening thread

The 1V is a little outdated.
3T of ammo is somewhat excessive these days, and the ML is OK, but an MPL or ERLL is preferable now.

And if you're going for a double AMS troll build - LCT-3M is a bit more durable.

His info on the 3S still holds pretty true though. :P

Ultimately, this was made long before the 3 new variants, and the Quirk System, both of which are huge changes.
Additionally, changes to weapons (such as MGs), Weapon Modules (then Weapon Modules actually becoming useful), Rewards 2.0 (giving slightly better rewards to our hit-and-run style) and the release of the Clan Mechs (which gave IS lights a new lease on life).

A lot has happened in 12 months.

Yep. Now that the quirks are done I need to actually get on with updating the thread.

Problem with the Pirates' Bane is how quickly you run out of side torso space. With DHS, ECM and XL engine, you really can be limited. I initially ditched one small laser and a half ton of MG ammo to fit a TAG, but the MG muzzle flash was so bad I got rid of the MG's, but couldn't find anything to do with a spare .5 tons. I finally switched to the AC2 loadout and it's stuck with me - it just looks too cool with a friggin' cannon on it's head!

This is what I've been running for the 3S - http://mwo.smurfy-ne...440bdbda4c5e281

It has MAJOR ammo problems and the only solution I can think of is either removing a launcher (Then you might as well run the 1M) or downgrade the engine to a 175, strip the arms to 5 armour each and the back left and right down to 2. That frees up an extra ton for ammo. The armour lay out freaks me out but I think that's because I'm new to Locusts (Another option is to remove 4 points from the head instead of the back.) - http://mwo.smurfy-ne...2ca9cbfc1e90cb0

You just don't need the armour on the head.
1pt is plenty.

LCT-3S
This gets you to 2T ammo, but is still lacking.

Seriously, read here (and the page around it):
http://mwomercs.com/...ost__p__4039725

Armour is a different beast on the Locust.

The bit specifically relating to armour is:

Quote

The locust must have Endo Steel and Ferro at all times.
This isn't too hard as it only costs 360,000C-Bills to get both and max armour.

This is your new armour layout:
LCT-1E
It will terrify you, and rightly so.
But you simply don't have enough armour / internal health for it to really matter.

You're 2/3/2 rear armour is enough to take an AC10 hit, and to deal with laser passes.
You cannot put enough armour there to take anything else, without making both the front and back incapable of taking a hit.
You're using that impressive torso twist to use your front armour as rear armour when running away, and your speed everywhere else.

By splitting it this way, you can comfortably take 1-2 shots of AC20 to the chest and survive.

When you're used to this or feeling more daring, it'll be time to move to this:
LCT-1E
The 5/1/5 on the arms and head honestly won't make much difference once you've learnt to pilot.

This works because your cockpit hitbox is almost nonexistant.
In some 400 drops in a Locust, I've been headshotted maybe twice.
There are those that run no head armour and just rely on the base 15HP.
I like at least 1. (That red/yellow arrow bothers me in the mechbay.)

The 5 on each arm is workable because they have pretty tiny hitboxes, especially from the front (you rarely get shot in the side / arms), and with 12 armour on each, I rarely if ever lost an arm.
Witth 5, I'll lose an arm on occasion, but it's still pretty rare for me to lose an arm before I simply die.

This layout also gives you 7 tons for weapons with the XL190.

Additionally, to allow you ton understand engines a bit better, a chart detailing the total weights of engines + heatsinks can be found here:
Spoiler

For the ones greyed out - there's no point in even owning them.
Engines with more power, and/or more internal heatsinks exist for the same weight.

Damn man. Locust armour theory is scary. LoL. Also, didn't even notice that I could have an 180 engine in that over the 175, so that's good to know. I just think that you need to go down to the 180 just to free that extra half ton for ammo, as you said the 2 tons really isn't helping the situation, I doubt that 2 1/2 tons will help either but what can you do. The 3S is REALLY asking too much from a 20 ton mech.

Yeah.

I just don't know what to do with it.
The 1M just outright outclasses it.

There's almost nothing the 3S can do, that the 1M doesn't just do better at.

The 4SRM 2 build is one of the few, but even then only barely breaks the alpha output of the 2MPL,2SRM 1M, and isn't half as sustainable.

Does put out solid screenshake with the chaining though.

If I remember rightly, a 3SRM2 build still cycles quick enough for the missile-MG build, and frees up a little extra weight.
LCT-3S

The LRM5 build(s) are good for a laugh too, which the quirks make it slightly improved for over the 1M
2LRM5 LCT-3S
LRM5 + SRM2 LCT-3S
LRM5 + SRM4 LCT-3S
LRM5 + SSRM2 LCT-3S
No idea how good thesell be.

i went with 3SRM2s in my 3S with two tons of ammo instead of 4srm2s because it gives you a few extra alphas (25 alphas for 4srm2 and 33.5 for 3 srm2s) and helps heatwise as well. worked ok. the 1M i'd like to throw an extra launcher or more ammo in but after 2MPLs and an srm 2 or 4 (i forget which) i have no slots left to put anything else in.

How can you even fit max engine, 5 spl AND bap into that tiny little 3M frame? I'm making do with an XL180, 4 spl and bap, and I'm doing okay with that, but that already maxes out my tonnage...

How are you not?
Did you not upgrade your frame and stuff? You get a ton of unused crit slots. Why waste them? If all else fails, shave armor, starting from the head first and moving to the arms if you really need to for some reason. You're dead if you get shot by anything serious anyway.

Don't worry, I've got it worked out now. I'm still wondering what the best front/rear armour ratios are though.

As per this post, and the post linked in it the following are really the only two practical armour layouts:
6.5T free LCT-1E
7T free LCT-1E

Read the link for the full armour theory, it's a crazy, scary concept, but makes sense once you know why.
