As a side note, this is just another reason why a suicide button is needed. A situation you know you're not going to escape anyway? Reactor overload, boom. Hug that.
The problem with that theory however is that following the lore, these are not fission reactors (the type we know for RL and sadly see
every few years "strike through to calm the nerves of some special snowflakes here" in the news such as Chernobyl or Fukushima), but small fusion reactors.
The difference in theory is that Fission reactors go bang like a burst balloon because they need constant cooling and a process to slow down the reaction. If this process does not work, then the nuclear reaction goes out of control and you have a melt down.
Fusion reactors on the other hand just kind of fizzle out and maybe implode a little depending on the type. Fusion reactors need massive electromagnets around the core to actually keep the reaction working, if these get breached or stop working, then the reaction itself can not carry on and just fizzles out like an embarrassing wet fart in a closed car (the gas spreads out too far apart to keep on reacting, but doesnt do much else).
This is also the reason why the so called Battletech Stackpoling of reactors (named after the author who apparently liked the idea of these mechs going nuclear that he used it multiple times) is so laughed about.
EDIT: Strikethrough on a few words which got some people too excited to read the rest of the post)
