Microsoft bought truespace from Caligari back in...2006 I think. With v7.6 as the last release. Then a few months later, MS killed the project and ended all support. At least the software itself is free now and there's a user update to v7.6.2 or something like that. As for mid 90s? I started with v2.5 in 1998.

yeah, i had the original and v2. used them in several video projects for special effects and graphics before i went to lightwave. was always easier to use than lw when the latter was still the 640x480 max window, but at the time clients wanted lw for broadcast... well, won't do the tmi.
anyway, haven't tried to animate anything in more than a decade, but i did grab the free 7.6 download from c/net... maybe i can amuse myself again. thank you, Ma'am, and again, you are doing very good work.

Wow, I haven´t checked in for a while now and suddenly I see you cranked out a Timberwolf and Mad Dog in no-time. Very nice modelling. The feet seem a bit flat, but the rest looks very nice.

well, that's certainly beefier (how is this word in my computer's dictionary?) than the normal look.
not a bad thing, though, just takes a little getting used to.

Perhaps a bit too beefy. Compared to the TWolf, it doesn't look 15 tons lighter.

I am glad you didn't post a pic of that rather homely individual when you asked that. Like someone else had earlier in this thread.

Maybe I paint them red. Red ones go faster.

I don't animate at all. I don't really know how to do it well in tS. Even after all of these years. That and the models and scenes I create can take hours for a single frame. I can't imagine having the patience and PC stability to do a full animation again.

Now, back to the model!

I've tried to slim the LT and RT down a bit. Plus I added in the cockpit. I wasn't sure how I'd design the cockpit itself. The big issue was on how to open the thing. Whether to slide it forward like I did on my Warhammer or some other method. But I went with a simpler design. A hinged section with a pair of actuators.

Posted Image

As a side note, someone elsewhere told me that the cockpit looks like it came off of an X-Wing. To this day, I have yet to actually build anything from Star Wars.

Instead of following the original nose, I swapped out the box nose portion for the forward sensor suite that's on the Apache. Once again, I take design elements from military aircraft.

Yes, definitely too beefy. I'm going to try the 3-column LRM20 and see if that works better. That means rebuilding the side torsos. Also not too fond of the patchwork looking armor plates at this point.

Edits, edits, edits... More later.

Gah! You must have replied while I was composing my last post. The feet had taken me a bit to get right as I was building the model. There are a few revisions earlier in the thread.

Nice work on finishing the TWolf B) Love the camo and detail and the tougher looking arms.

That targeting suite on the Mad Dog is a nice idea, makes a nice change from the square one that is usually depicted.

I can't wait to see the Dog finished

I'm getting close, so you won't have to wait too long!

OK! Completely rebuilt the side torso, reworked the armor plates, and readjusted the size of the rest of the surface details. I also detailed the CT side plates a bit.

Left the rear a bit sparse since the mini and resin cast models lacked a bit of detailing on the RCT. Just added some cooling vents because there's still a miniature star burning inside of that shell.

Lets talk Lasers!

First image are the Large and Medium ER Lasers from my TWolf model. I wanted to differentiate Extended Range and Pulse lasers from each other in their visual design. Unfortunately, real world lasers pretty much look exactly the same. The difference being that pulse lasers use software, a diode or some other mechanism to make the beam pulse.

The second image is my first hit at a Large Pulse Laser.

may i ask a question? (hope so, because i 'm going to anyway...):

wouldn't the slimmer profile hinder the pilot's view when he/she needs to see out the sides of the cockpit? i like the slimmer look, fits better the profile we expect of a Mad Dog, but it looks like a double Hunchie like that. is it worth considering moving the side torsos back enough that you clear the cockpit windows... perhaps leave the arms where they are in relation to ct, but slip the sides back a bit?

it wouldn't make a huge difference at times, but wouldn't entering/leaving and being able to see while powered down both presume a bit more room to the sides?

Mad Dog is my favorite mech. HanaYuriko is making art like nobody's beeswax. Thanks for your time in putting these together for us to see.

I imagine he could, but that same vision blocking can block sideshots to the head, as well. Plus, it is not as if it is uncommon on clan machines. Hellbringer's head is located between its shoulders, Summoner has an LRM pod taking up its entire left side, Ebon Jaguar has those GIGANTIC arms on either side of its head.... The defensive trade off must be viewed as worth it, I suppose.

You make some fine points that I'll address in a moment. You'll see what I mean as I explain the next set of images.

Thanks! Though there are two or three other fine renditions of this particular omnimech in this section of the forum. Especially
Joe's High Poly Vulture with Internals.

Some artistic renditions of the Mad Dog have the sides of the cockpit covered, some don't. It's generally up to the person doing the design. Cover art for some source books and novels vary widely in how the details are arranged. But the general design and shape are fairly consistent. But yeah, there's a tradeoff between visibility and protection in a lot of designs. The thing is, Clan Mechwarriors don't really NEED windows since the neural helmet offers a 360° view of the outside.

Now onto the 'mech! First image is just weapon placement. I needed to see the size and position for scale before I started on the gun mounts.

Posted Image

I got into such a groove that I didn't take shots of the arm pod mounts as I went along. But here's the mostly completed model. I had to lengthen the barrels for the lasers to better match the original artwork. My first built looked too stubby at the time.

Posted Image
looked Now some of you had noticed that the torso sections looked too large. As I was doing test renders, the model looked good from every angle but one. The profile showed me that the 'mech was too top heavy. You can see it in the next image.

Posted Image
What I did was fairly simple! I reduced the size of the CT, LT, and RT by 10%. That's it! The missiles, arms, and cockpit interior were unchanged. Just had to do a bit of positioning to get stuff in the correct spot afterwards.

Now with a reduced size and a narrower forward view, I looked back and noticed something I'd missed as I built this thing. The original TRO3050 artwork shows just a front view. And the torso sections weren't connected directly. There's something of a spacer in between.

Which you can see here.

Posted Image

And now, you can see the completed model.

Lastly, the final set of renders.

looking good HY.

I wish I could be posting on here more, but holiday season in retail leaves my creative juices boiled out on the ground somewhere.

Amen :o

I love the taller LRM racks, the proportions look better with them that way. Nice take on the pulse lasers too :P All around excellent :)

I liked your Atlas model. Well apart from it's tiny ankles. But the rest looked pretty good! Sadly I don't have a copy of it any longer due to some reformatting and hardware crashes and all that fun stuff.

Did you try to print these models in 3D-printer? Is it possible, or they should be completely remade to be printable?

I have another model I'm planning on building and might make a thread when I have time to get to it.

Here's a teaser.

My models are composed of dozens (if not more) objects. I don't rightly know how much work would be needed to make them ready for printing.

Although, I forget if HY's already done it...
