Having just seen this video (to my knowledge the only video released so far that only has the ingame sounds on max level, no commentary etc.), I must say I'm a bit disappointed by the "feeling" the AC evokes.
In other videos the action was more fast-paced and we had music etc. to divert from the details, but seeing the Hunchback firing away with the MGs (cool effects btw!) and then just that single tiny *clang* when firing the AC/5, just don't feels right.
It's the same with the other videos released so far, the Atlas' AC/20 has nearly the same feeling from what I could see.
Especially since I'm reading the old novels right now and just read a passage about Ardan Sortek in his Victor, firing the AC/20 that supposedly fires "shots" of 100 rounds each and each salvo lasts about 6 seconds.
Those numbers naturally are way exaggerated comparing them to actual TT-stats and later novels, but it gives a clue about the weapon used: It's a giant machinegun that spews forth a deadly hail of metal. The way I always pictured this is a stream of large bullets, rocking your own mech back from the recoil, accompanied by a tremendous blast and noise, like 10 modern tanks firing at nearly the same time. The closest a game came to this was Mechwarrior 3 where you actually had a longer stream of projectiles. There you could begin to feel the force behind such a large gun.
Long story short, I'd like to get some opinions on this and maybe the Devs can be persuaded to make the visuals and sounds for the AC/20 (and maybe other ACs?) a bit more dramatic, if they aren't placeholders in the first place.

Edit: Link to the poll in Suggestions. Please go there to vote and comment so the Devs get a picture of how many of us think the ACs need a bit more "power"

Yeah when i watched the video i was a little taken aback by the slightly weak sounding AC, hell even the machine guns. I know there's a balance to be made between levels otherwise it will just become a mess. But i would say it should sound a little more throaty.
Could always mess with the EQ on your computer and increase the lower frequencies .

That Hunchback is armed with an AC/5, plus two machineguns, a small laser, and five medium lasers

I'd have to imagine it would be a loud drawn out sound. Way back when I was in naval aviation and the sound that the 20mm cannons on an A-6 made was almost like a sheet of heavy canvas being torn then amplified by 100. It was an impressive, unforgettable sound of power.

Jep, sorry, my mistake, but I didn't solely base the post on this video, it also holds true for the vids with the Atlas firing the AC/20.

If you want the devs to listen to you, post this in the suggestion section.

I do agree with you for the AC sounds, they seem to be drowned by the sound of lasers (should be the other way around).

Also don't forget, it is still awhile to open beta so they can always tweak and change things.

The AC/20 in the Assault Breakdown does sound a bit weak, but it's pretty hard to judge given the voiceovers

Agreed, ballistic sounds could use a ton of more "oomph" from what I have noticed. The machineguns sound like a burning and crackling campfire (I'd love to have the Vulcan's sound for them that RevenG mentioned). The laser sounds are excellent, at least the medium lasers.

Agreed. The lasers look much cooler this time out, so kudos to that. I always thought they were the most 'boring' of weapons before, but in this game they seem cooler. That slightly longer fire time makes a big difference.

By contrast, the AC as shown in the gameplay videos is very unexciting. Obviously that is the sort of thing that can be changed before it launches, but if everything stayed as is, I'd be more likely to be a laser boat, rather than my usual AC heavy configurations.

I intentionally posted this here before making a suggestions. I wanted to know first if it's only me or if others see it the same way. And the Devs are also reading in GD

I agree. The AC/5 sounded like a machine gun, not an AC that could rip a Mech's arm off.

I don't agree. Wait until the game is right in front of you with your bass thumping after each blast. Yes, it was a video with no commentary, but it was a 720p video at that. Videos can never do a game justice compared to having it right in front of you.

Even if the sound effects will get a lot better in the final version, that won't change the "feeling" that much. It still will be a single *clang* where one would expect a long roaring staccato.
Yes. the game is not even beta, but that's why we should point things like this out now.

A game that supports 5.1 audio but is not captured at those channels or in the amount of range (or gets compressed) will ultimately sound less than what was intended.

Still, a nice video that showcases the other half of the immersion factor: how important audio is.

I want the AC's and Gauss to sound intimidating in the battlefield before all others, yes even a PPC (but the PPC has another way of making itself stand out). The sound of a AC/20 and a Gauss firing should make you instantly recognise it and fear it.

to me the sound of the AC5 sounded kinda muted. The jury is still out for me on the sound. I would want to hear it on my PC on my speakers before I can say "hey this don't sound right".

i think that, when fired, the auto cannon should spew mussle flash and it should make a clang sound when reloaded.
just like a tank shell loading into its cannon

I agree with this. Most weapons being sized for mechs should be loud. I think thats part of the experiance, the sounds of battle, maybe you missed that mech walking behind you because you were firing your guns and couldnt hear the footsteps.

well the ac 5 is a long range weak ac. the ac 20 is 4x more ac. so its clang x4! or more like a massive "whoomp" same for a gauss slug or a ppc. ac 5 is just an anti mech machine gun compared to ac 20 sized weapons being cannons.

loud if youre out standing on the lighter weapon as it fires, quiet when seated in the mech listening to the roar of the reactor and voice coms.

takes 5+ ac 5 hits to rip an arm off, an ac 20 can nearly rip an arm off in 1, and a 20 is 4 5 hits if they do TT dmg for the sizes (the only benefit to using 10s 5s and 2s, is range)
