Constant Losses Getting Disheartening

However, I had a couple buddies gather around this weekend and I booted up MWO to show them the game. I played 3 quick games and in all 3 matches, my team lost terribly - by at least 7 to 1, even 8 to 0. They asked me, "is it always so lop-sided"?
I had to tell them, "YES, and usually I am on the loosing team at least 4 out of 5 times".
I am not a bad looser, I have been playing this game for months, and have gotten a lot better at it, I have played nearly 1000 matches... nearly always the looser, it has taken a long time to get 3 Atlases to Elite
I know there is nothing that can really be done, but it does get disheartening.

If you have 3 Atlases to Elite then probably you have played enough games to get pretty decent at the game. I would suggest that you not get too disheartened. Somewhere along the lines I wish someone had told you that the Atlas is the worst possible mech for new players because, contrary to the popular belief of it being the "strongest mech", the Atlas does require a high degree of situational awareness, aiming ability, and teamwork to use effectively. At 1000 matches you probably know this now.
Going forward, I hope your friends give the game a try. This weekend the best of the best seem to be out in force with the tournament going on, but the grinding ensures that their elo ratings will be high. After this weekend, I am sure that new players will find a much friendlier game than before and hopefully you too will find your place.

If you only pilot Atlas's, you need to buy a medium or heavy like the Centurian or Cataphract so you get a better sense of tactics. The Atlas is limited to just a few tactical choices because it is quite slow and easy to gang up on, in fact that is normal. Hunchback, Centurian, Cataphract, Trebuchet are good choices.

Yeah, I have high expectations of this tournament. This was a pretty good move of PGI to make the ELO system work better. Hope the matchmaker will be better after this.

Loser. Someone who loses.
Loose. The opposite of tight.
Looser. More loose.

Lets start from the top, what Atlas variant are you driving and what's your loadout?

I think you need to buy yourself a decent medium. This 4SP will force you to improve.
Other than that, maybe post some of your Atlas builds so we can review it. It is hard to give specific tips on how to get better with so little to work with.

Learning on an Atlas is the worst possible thing to learn on. Mediums are -much- better mechs to learn without crippling your team if you don't deal more than 100 damage or so.

Too high in my opinion. New players should be rated much lower, to make sure, they get matched with new players only(or mainly)
The current system puts new players right there with and against medicore veterans.
And while it is discouraging to new players, it is also annoying for medicore rated vets, that have to cope with those newbies that hardly understand the basic mechanics of the game.

I didnt do well in an atlas at first either. I took me about two months to "get teh ropes" but you could try my method. I got 3 of the worst mech, the dragon, and starting beating me head against a wall. Slowly, and I mean slowly, my scores went up, then I moved to centurions, did the same, then cataphracts... then I got the catapults, and saw some imp[rovements due to how powerful they can be. Finally I came back to the atlas's, some 2+ months, and many mechs later.
Think of the dragon as a backpack with rocks in it. You run in that for 2 weeks, or 2 months, then move to something better, and you will notice a difference. I promise.
To those who say, but I do well in a dragon, I say I know ive seen some real dragon pros, but I sure have an easier time in my splat cat or my atlas with an alpha of 80 something.

The better Movement gives you the possiblity to figth at varrious places and positions through the Match and if you are got killed, its not a too big loss for your Team. Sometimes the better Speed gives you also the change, to get out of tricky Situations.

As for my mech, I worked my way up from a Commando, Centurion, 3 Catapults and now 3 Atlas. However, my FPS is pretty low, so I can't really play a fast mech, waay to choppy.
My current load-out is 2 lrg pulse las, med las, AC20, SRM6 (with art), LRM 15 (w/ art)
