I use a logitech Extreme 3D pro with variable Axis settings. I can configure the X axis to turn the mech, the Y axis as a throttle, I can ignore the actual throttle and use the mouse for torso movement (ie targeting). This was the way I played MW2, MW3, Starsiege, and most recently (thanks to the Logitech stick) I can now play that way with MW4. I'm hoping for similar abilities with MWO Mercs.

Sidewinder joysticks have been discontinued for a long time. So, it's not exactly a good start point unless you want to spend money on a used joystick, or hundreds of dollars for a boxed one. Logitech is a good starting point with their cheaper sticks, though.

Yeah, they may be a bit dated, but they're rugged as hell.
only issue I had was the tendancy to tip the joystick a bit when playing. so I made a small box to put it in and filled it with some weights.
I can't really recommend CH's pedals. They're really not that great. I just programmed one of the hat switches to do torso twists.
That's 176 programmable functions per controller

Yep! I own and love both of those! I hope to pick up the MFP from CH Products too! http://www.chproduct...retail/mfp.html

A lot less physical strain, and much more durable

I have tried Saitek and others and they have always been weak on fine control and don't work in some games... even ones listed as supported. I haven't tried the X-52, but too expensive and I have had to toss Saitek's Cyborg because it wasn't working in some games and could never equal the Sidewinder's control.

What sort of set ups do people use for "steering" sticks? It isn't exactly a common set up, I imagine you would use the mouse for aiming up and down + torso twist and put steering and throttle on the stick?
