What is it with games these days and using flash for their UI and being so poorly optimized?

I'm no game designer but it just reeks of lazy developers. I seem to remember a time where everything was rendered on the game's engine like it was supposed to be.

EDIT: I actually don't have any FPS issues, other than all around lower than I'd like due to my 3 year old budget gaming PC, though it may be because I already messed with my flash settings thanks to another recent game that had massive FPS issues due to it's UI.

Not to throw this off topic, but that depends on what your using flash for.
But yea, scale form is not fun.

Short and sweet: Scaleform is based on flash, and flash is the synonym of garbage in the computer industry.

What.

But...MWO uses Cryengine 3. >_> That changing a setting in Flash Player affects MWO makes no sense.

More likely buyers remorse over picking CryEngine instead of Unreal or Gamebryo.

Staffing people for Unreal would be soooooooo much easier. That said, the UI it's probably Scaleform, which is derived from Flash, so UI people shouldn't really be that hard to hire.

They've confirmed that it's Scaleform until CryEngine 1.4 or whatever comes out, then they'll be able to redo or optimize it. I don't remember the post. It might still be Scaleform actually which would explain why everything is so clunky and bad.

Did you know that MWO uses scaleform which means that our UI is flash based, it doesn't take too much to make a good looking scifi anything in flash

yes, yes, Drivers wouldn't make difference because even the "Flash"(aka Scaleform GFx) UI in the game is running slow which has nothing to do with the 3D rendering!...

There was a post somewhere from the devs saying that ScaleForm and Action-Script were probably the main cause of peoples problems atm. (the ones going from playable a few patches ago, to not playable now etc.....)

I forget the exact reasons why, but apparently scaleform/actionscript atm is quite a cpu hog and they are going to re-do parts of it or something, but have to wait for an update from the dev's of scaleform or action-script or something...........like I said, I can't remember exactly what the reason or plan was, but they did say it was causing perfomance issues they could see on their end or something.....

Take from that whatever you will........

Another goal we have for the technical vision of MechWarrior Online is in the areas of visuals and immersion. Early on we chose to go with CryEngine to really allow us to create the best Mech visuals yet seen in a MechWarrior game. We're also using Scaleform to help realize a great level of fidelity for the Mechs cockpit and displays. We really want to support the fans that want to get more immersed than ever; if you have 3 monitors and a great flight stick we want to ensure you can use them to play MWO.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts MWO does not have a cheap HUD it contains a lot of detail and we always planned to have Scaleform 4.0 as part of the CryEngine 3.4 update which is much more optimal than the version currently in MWO. Sadly this integration did not come as part of the 3.4 update, so we are now taking the time to make the HUD more optimal until such time as we can upgrade MWO to the latest version. A minor improvement goes out today which was a bug fix for an issue that was causing the cockpit monitors to use more draw calls than necessary.

Huh, well how about that. Had no idea ScaleForm was derived from Flash. Explains why it's so common.
