I don't understand 5/8, 4/6?

Kurshuk

TT movement rate terminology. A 4/6 mech will have a top speed of about 63 KPH with the default engine while a 5/8 mech will have a top speed of about 81 KPH with default engine (without speed tweak). And remember the size of the default engine determines the size of the max engine in a mech.

I can go 92.7kph on my HBK-4SP on a STD 250 engine with the mech tree unlocked. That will allow you to run circles around most heavies and assaults in comparison, and chase down lights if neccessary. If you are playing with a stock engine, you are doing it wrong.

They need more 5/8 mediums. That was always the bread and butter of the medium class for me. None of these 4/6 slowpokes.

As it was said before. The REAL medium Mechs of this timeline are all UNSEEN.
Phoenix Hawk, Shadowhawk, Wolverine, Griffin.
But those won't ever show up in the game. So we are limited to second line fire support mechs and specialized chassis.

Phoenix Hawk
45 Tons
97 KPH
1 Large Laser
2 Medium Lasers
2 Machine Guns

Shadowhawk
55 Tons
86 KPH
Medium Laser
LRM 5
Autocannon 5
SRM 2

Wolverine
55 Tons
86 KPH
Autocannon 5
SRM 6
Medium Laser

Griffin
55 Tons
86 KPH
PPC
LRM 10

All of these "classic" medium mechs are utterly terrible, they could easily be recreated with the current medium chassis that we are using. This isn't done because they are godawful designs.

The Pheonix Hawk is nothing more than a overheat shutdown waiting to happen, the Shadowhawk combines an LRM5 and an SRM2 for maximum uselessness, he wolverine being the best of the bunch is still woefully undergunned, and the Griffin is annoying at long range and dead as soon as something closes with it.

Quote

Hunchback --> Dedicated to City fights

A perfectly servicable brawler and the 4SP will outgun any of the above mechs.

Quote

Trebuchet --> LRM firesupport Mech

Except for the laser versions, the SRM versions, and the PPC/AC versions, right?

Quote

Centurion --> Was constructed as companion for the Trebuchet / constructed as Bodyguard

Arguably the most dangerous medium on the modern MWO battlefield

Quote

Cicada --> LMFAO.....the only reason you can drive a Cicada is the Mechlab

I don't even know how to respond to this...

Quote

Blackjak --> AK LR firesupport Mech

With 2 AC/2s and 4 medium lasers it at least matches the firepower of the 'classic' medium mechs.

Pray for the Blackjack with 4 missile hardpoints in the side torsos (and jumpjets too). That thing will make everyone reconsider the usefulness of Mediums.

The diversity will improve once we get some clan mechs around. Right now the medium mechs we have now fulfill different roles, but not exactly the jack-of-all trades one. Right now each of the mech does something specific, so it's not like they are bad by any means... not everyone has the same playstyle to make the most out of them.

Bigger engine = more 2.0 heatsinks, faster speed, greater torso twist rate, higher heat capacity.

But whatever floats your boat.

I like playing mediums, but the real value of the class is the price/availability in lore terms. Neither of those mean squat in MWO terms unfortunately. I think scaling them in relation to larger mechs would help, as would a slight buff in maneuverability so they clearly out maneuver a heavy (all of which can currently reach the same or better tops speeds as most cents and Hunchbacks.

Not to complain though.. I do love my centurions just the way they are too!!

looks like the max engine size will be altered by the tweaks they are doing per chassis. For instance the 64kph cents can now mount up to 275 engines from 260 previously

What we really need is weight-based matchmaking.
There's no way Mediums are going to be competitive or even viable without it - in the current state of the game, most people are just using Heavies or Lights, so if you're using a Medium 'Mech, there's a pretty good chance the opposing team will get a Heavy instead.

That's no contest and it just makes the Medium 'Mechs of MWO look even worse than they are...

The one possible exception is the CN9-D which can be built as a pretty decent flanker and backstabber.
