So you are in a match and you see an ally who is holding his mech together through sheer determination while being assaulted by a larger mech which is almost in perfect condition. Most of your ally’s weapons are still operational, but the condition of his mech will keep him from winning, and you are the only one nearby who can help him. Rushing in to help him will almost certainly see most of your mech torn to shreds, but not far enough to destroy it.

Edit:I left thing a little vague as to what kind of mechs are fighting here. Use your imagination as to what is going on other than what I have set in pixels.

My mech will probably be too slow to interpose myself in the line of fire, but well-equipped to provide support fire with PPC and LRM.

Id do anything to try and save my Lance-mate, were Lance-mates, that makes us family, we dont just leave each other to be gunned down, if i have the chance to distract the enemy just enough to save one of the lance or to get a kill shot on the enemy, that ill take it. If i die, than i die a true solider.

Depends on circumstances. If the guy getting reamed is doing so because of a lack of teamwork and forethought, I'm not risking my own skin to cover their mistake.

If it's a part of an intentional planned strategy and I have the mech for it, sure.

Charging in seems like a poor tactical move. If your lancemate's mech is nearly destroyed, the odds of you getting in and saving him are rather slim. Also, it is quite dependent on the mech you're in. As a support pilot, charging in is almost never going to be the go to option for me, so I go with B.

Can't save everyone.

You can't win MechWarrior without your team, so you do what you can to help, but most likely they will ignore you unless you ram them and actually stop them.

Depending on mech types involved in the scenario, your best bet might be to rush in...but do it by sweeping to his rear arc. This allows you to inflict damage on what is likely his least protected side. His options are to give you the chance to core into him while finishing off your comrade, or to turn 180 to engage you, leaving your still armed lancemate in the rear arc. And with less experienced pilots, you can also promote indecision and a moment's hesitation as they try to determine just what their best move is.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell

That is what I'd do :).

Thanks to lord T, wish you still had a hand I could shake.

Hit one of us , hit all of us.

Help your lancemate , the other guy must die even if you have to ram him

Option 2, I think. My mech probably wouldn't survive long enough to do anything but give the enemy a free kill. You could even say my Raven would become my Graven. D'ohohoho!

why storm in? if you have line of sight, just fire on him.

if the ally dies, well, no one told him to charge in. he can reverse throttle back to the friendly lines if he wants to live.

This would be very situational for me, if this was a clanmate or someone i trusted will still be usefull then hell yeah, charge in with an assault mech and take the hit for him.

however on the flip side, if this pilot has proven to be worthless or not able to pull his own weight, then he can burn on the spot, and when he dies i will then challenge the mech that just destroyed my ally.

If I'm not engaged, I'll take two seconds to line up a shot on my buddy's attacker and kill him.

If I am engaged, I'll use my discretion based on the threat of my attacker, versus the chance my buddy will get killed, versus the terrain around me. IE: If I can evade my attacker and quickly reach a position to fire on my buddy's attacker, I will help him. If it's going to be a long time getting around, then I'll have to deal with my attacker first.

If I am on my way to Cap'n'Hold a mission critical target for a win/massive lead in the match, then my buddy is doing his job by tying up an enemy that could otherwise prevent me from attaining my current objective.

tl/dr (you're a lazy one, ain't ya?) Observe & act. Don't take a long time pondering your next course of action, trust your lizard brain.

As my officers always told me in the army : "Always adapt yourself" ! (sounds better in french :D )

So it would depend on the circumstances of the fire-fight. I'll gladly throw myself in front of my lance-mate if that doesn't mean I'm gonna get shot by 4 mechs at the same time, Better to loose one single mech and prepare for a counter-attack than to loose 2 and risking the entire Lance and loosing the mission.

Plus, again as my officer always say (said...) : "not a step without cover". So if the commanding officer knows his job, as soon as my teammate is getting shot, I should be able to produce cover-fire right the second. If not, well that's bad news for the whole lance .

Still, I answered 2
