hi folks. started playing this weekend, and totally enjoying it even though i suck! I'm really not much of a PC gamer overall, and I think that's mostly because I hate using a keyboard, which generally really isn't optimized for a gaming experience.

So i'm thinking of getting two peripherals that may make me want to game on my PC more, and also make playing MWO more fun. Looking at getting a Logitech Wireless Gaming Mouse G700 and the Logitech G13 Programmable Gameboard.

Wondering if any mechwarriors out there use these and how you feel about them specifically for MWO? Good, bad, indifferent? Does MWO even let you take advantage of these type of peripherals?

MWO will let you take advantage certainly the mouse (not sure about the keyboard, didn't look into it). I use a Logitech G500 mouse personally (dislike wireless, and I got it on sale) and I love it. The buttons on the side are perfect for extra weapon groups allowing you to easily map 4 weapon groups to the mouse itself. I will say something though, do NOT order a mouse online you haven't already checked out in person.

Mice are fickle things. Some mice will fit your hand perfectly and will feel great. Others will feel off and just subtly wrong. It all has to do with the dimensions of your hand and how you hold the mouse itself. Definitely find a store that has your mouse, and others on display where you can actually try using it. Then go order it online as you'll likely find a better deal.

For example, my room mate has a Razer mouse while I have my previously mentioned Logitech one. Both companies make good mice, and hardware wise they're both solid choices. However we hate each other's mouse. Our hands are different and how we hold them is slightly different. Find the mouse that fits your hand and you'll love it for years.

The Logitech G700 is the best mouse I have ever owned. I don't think you'll be sorry. In terms of MWO, the G700 lets you have all your weapon groups and vision modes right on your mouse. The amount of buttons are just right. I'm never left stumbling for the right button like I think I would be with something like a Razer Naga.

I can't say anything about the G13 though. I've never used anything but a normal keyboard.

EDIT: I forgot one of my favorite features of the G700. It's wireless but you can plug in the charge cable super quick and it becomes a wired mouse almost seamlessly. Sometimes there is a half second pause but most of the time it's less than that. Also, having the different profiles is handy if you play a lot of different games.

Thanks SpekX... i'm reading some really good reviews of the G700... think i'm sold on it. Might try the G13 while I'm at it, seems like it also got good reviews. There's a Razr one kinda like it too, so just want to figure out which is better.

I'm a really big fan of the (edit, oops I meant g13) logitech G13. I have smaller/medium sized hands, but have no problems using the thumb-stick on it for axis rotation. The WASD buttons are placed just right, and don't suffer the offset of a typing kb. Oversize thumb/pinky keys are good for target switching and the E and R key I remapped to heat vision/zoom. I can't remember which one I mapped to window-zoom (edit, duh--it's the other oversized pinky/thumb keys), but it's always easy to get to, as well. The center torso c key was a tad tricky to find at first, and the 2 buttons below and to the side of the thumb-stick I have not found a use for in this game.

The only time I'll switch to the kb is to toggle night-vision (I use it much less and to chat, where I'm typing anyway, and esc. key...maybe a few others). It's also really comfortable, with a rubberized wrist rest that I think is angled perfectly.

There is none (that I know of) dedicated G13 software add on that lets MWO take advantage of the LCD screen (and I would like to see some functionality there) but that's a minor quibble.

I have a razer kb, but haven't found much use for tweaking it.

Best mouse I've owned, it fits my hand just right, is built "right" and has enough buttons to choose (at least?) 5 firing groups:

Logitech Wireless Performance Mouse MX for PC and Mac

edit: which mouse are you looking at? I have the death adder. If you like a really lightweight mouse it's ok, but it feels kind'a cheap to me (not just because the battery in the logitech adds weight) and it needs to be tweaked. the logitech mouse has all but replaced except when I lose/misplace the charging cable or the receiver after throwing them in the laptop bag for a trip and forgetting it at work. i think it's a much, much better mouse.

My Logitech G700 has been sitting on my desk for a little over two years. No mouse would have lasted that long if I didn't truly enjoy it. I love all the extra buttons, I love that it's wireless, and I, at least, find that it has a nice feel to it. Other people might try to say something about wireless mice and input lag or something of that sort. I would say to try it for yourself. I've had absolutely no problems with my mouse. I don't notice any input lag. My G700 is responsive, accurate, and smooth.

One negative thing I will say about it, though. I don't know if they've revised the cord over the years (as I said, I've had the same one for about 2 years and 4 months) but the cord that came with mine is horrid. The idea is that you can plug in the cord and charge the mouse while still using it. The cord I have is super heavy and stiff. It absolutely destroys the feel of the mouse to have that cord plugged in. It's so bad that after only a couple of days of owning the mouse I decided to get a separate AA battery charger. Now I have one battery in the mouse and another sitting on a charger. I swap out the battery instead of using the cord to charge. Some might consider this a hassle, but I personally don't really mind. I have been doing this for 2 years after all :)

I do also have a G13 board. Honestly, I've been playing MWO for a few months but I haven't setup my G13 for it. This isn't because I don't like the G13 (far from it) but simply because I don't really feel the need. I originally bought the G13 for World of Warcraft and other MMOs where I need a dizzying number of abilities at my fingertips at all times. For this purpose, the G13 absolutely works amazingly. When I played WoW I had every button on my G13 bound, plus every button on my G700, and still sometimes I felt like I wanted one or two more keys. That's not a knock on the G13 at all, just a comment on how many darn buttons I wanted for WoW...

I've had the G13 for about three years and I would certainly buy it again. As I said, I haven't used it for MWO, but that's mainly because I don't see the need. As a primarily PC gamer I'm very much accustomed to using a keyboard. I don't typically bother to setup my G13 for a game like MWO that doesn't really have too many required buttons. This certainly doesn't mean that you can't do it yourself and enjoy it. I'm just a lazy ******* and so I don't configure a profile for my G13 unless it's a game where I really need it. I might eventually get around to it one of these days.

I have the G13. Works perfect and I love it. I steer and control the throttle w/ the thumb joystic. Really too many buttons for this game, but it is amazing for other games.

I have had a lot of different mice, Microsoft sidewinder, steelseries WoW, Razer Naga, several logitechs...I now use the cyborg R.A.T. 7 - amazing customization so it "feels" right. Now that I no longer drag my pinkie, its almost like it moves too fast, LOL.

Also have to endorse the Razer sphex mouse pad. For only like $15, it works so well.

Well, if we're gonna throw mouse pads into the mix...I recently spent a rather ridiculous $40 on a Corsair MM600 pad. I absolutely love the thing, though. It's night and day compared to the cheapo regular cloth pad I was using. My mouse feels like it's floating on air. It was an immediate, HUUUGE difference in the feel of my mouse. It is a crap ton to spend on a mouse pad, though. This is my first serious pad, too, so I have no idea whether I would have preferred any of the other, cheaper pads out there. I like Corsair products and, for some reason, I liked the idea that it was aluminum, so I simply pulled the trigger on it. Ultimately I'd say I'm very satisfied with it even despite the price.

I will also recommend the G700. Its pretty awesome. I have mine set up with 5 weapon groups, target acquisition, thermo vision, etc. The 3 buttons next to the left click are really nice for your secondary weapon groups. I even have 'missile doors' on it, for when playing my catapult. Oh, and I programmed a DPI button to change my DPI for more accurate sniping.

As an alternative to the G13, I use the Steelseries merc stealth keyboard. it has a nice game pad built in on the left side. I prefer it over the G13 because it has more thumb buttons, and is more ergonomic for me. I have 'full stop', jump jets, ecm toggle, and powerdown all under my thumb. I have some other random crap under my pinkie. The downside to the merc stealth is that the number pad side is a bit wierd, but you get used to it.

G700 + merc stealth is a powerful combination in my opinion.

I love Logitech, but on a whim I picked up the Razer Naga Hex and I'm loving it, especially for MWO. having 6 buttons so easy to get to at your thumb is great - though i admit, this mouse is not made for big hands.

I've had both the G700 and the G13, both are great, but if you're definitely picking one of those, I'd go for the 700.

kinda a razer fanboy here dont kill me but anyway you said you are not much of a pc gamer so I assume you are a console gamer so this should interest you.

Ive been using a razer naga for a year now, plenty of buttons.

And as of last week I just picked up a razer nostromo
http://www.razerzone.../razer-nostromo
Posted Image

The dpad is what you might be interested in, it has 8 programmable directions and the little joystick nub can be removed to use the dpad underneath.

Setup
-So far I have the dpad mapped to throttle up, full stop and the a and d keys for leg direction.
-The keypad is mapped to wasd movement and the other usual surrounding functions (target, name overlay, center torso and so on).
-The scroll wheel is maped to W and D for throttle and it works really well and much more precise then just the keyboard, one scroll nudge moves your speed up in set increments, so basicly 0kph, 17.6kph, 21.3kph, 25.5kph. 29.3kph and so on.
-The silver button is my jumpjets
- The button below the dpad is ctrl so that I can free look out my cockpit windows.

The nostromo is quite an old model but for me it works perfectly, the dpad/joystick works well for flight sim games too.

Razer also have a new version the Orbweaver with more buttons an improved joystick and a more adjustable arm rest. http://www.razerzone...razer-orbweaver

I use a G700, and love it, I also have a razer mamba, which sees a fair bit of use simply b/c it is the mouse attached to my desktop, and not the one i carry around for my laptop the g700(I spend a decent amount of time playing MWO on my lappy, but slightly more playing it on my desktop). I like the mamba but feel it develops problems quickly, I've had 2 now and both have developed an issue with certain buttons where sometimes when you click it won't do anything, or sometimes it will double. that said it is still the mouse I use most. can't say I've had any issues with the g700.

I'm sure others have had much better experiences with the Razers, I think this is one of those times, where your mileage may vary.

For me its always a Steelseries Merc Stealth. I have been useing them for meny years since the Merc series keyboards. They allow programable keys and etc like most gamming keyboards but they are set out to actually have kays just for gaming. Im not talking about 6 programable extra keys but 34. The LED colours are pretty but useless and it is the difference between the Merc and Merc Steath.

The keyboard has a gamming side to it with a dedicated WASD area that feels so good after the initial getting used to phase. The only issue i ever have with it is when games use "Z" or "X" keys in their layouts as these two are not in the WADS area so i just reconfigure the keys in game to suit.

Seriously have a look at it, they are relitivly cheap compared to the direct competition and they come out on top in so meny ways. Its just that they are NOT the massive big budget advertising entitys of Logitec or Razor.

im using a corsair m90...but as was mentioned you really want to feel the mouse in your hand before you shell out a bunch of money...

it has plenty of buttons...more than i ever use...and is smooth as silk on an aluminum mouse mat...2 things i dont like though is the unintuitive macro software...and it doesnt have interchangeable weights...(i actually think the weight is perfect...pretty heavy)

the thing has an aluminum block body hiding underneath it...u could really hurt someone with it

The logitech G13 and the G700 is the exact combo i use. It's so comfortable and intuitive that now i refuse to game without it.
The fact that profiles can be saved to the onboard memory and accesed throught the logitech gaming application, so that you don't even have to remap controls (as long as the other computer is using default controls) is just icing on the cake.

The G700 has lots of buttons, but the only thing i use with it is the dpi cycling to make sniping easier while at extreme ranges.

Figure out where you want your fingers positioned and how many buttons you would actually want to press/control - For both the keyboard and mouse. That should help narrow down your choices.

I personally have a Razer Naga Hex, which has 6 thumb buttons positioned in a circular fashion that are very intuitive for the thumb and practically made for the 6 weapon groups in MWO. There are several more buttons on it, and everything is fully customizeable and DPI can be changed on the fly. Any more than 6 thumb buttons would be useless for my mouse, but I'm not a hardcore gamer or an MMO player. So MMO players may be tuned to fully utilizing 20 thumb buttons on their mouse.

I have an older Logitech keyboard (forget the model #), which has at least 18 programmable buttons on the left side of the standard keys, 3 buttons to toggle 3 preset "maps" for the 18 keys, backlighting toggle key, audio controls, and more. I got it used for $25 and am extremely happy with it. Sure beats paying twice to triple that for new keyboards with extra features I won't use.

THIS!!!! I have used these since it was the origional N52 by Belkin, I've had my N52te for years, before Razor took it over from Nostromo/Belkin. This is a must have if you don't want to use a stick system. Also get a good gaming mouse, adjustable DPi, multiple buttons, and in your price range. Also I've found the stranger the mouse looks the less comfort you have. Good luck
