I've been a bunch of matches lately with a bunch of crying about LRMs if you don't have ECM. So here's some ground rules on dealing with them.
1) Stick by cover. Buildings, big hills, whatever...just so long as it's taller than your mech. When you get the "Incoming Missle" warning, duck behind it. If you're going to stand in the open and eat LRMs like it's your job, enemy pilots will be more than happy to feed you.

2) If you have a hill that has a shallow grade to it, don't just back up to break line of sight and then stop. You want to break line of sight (and their lock) and also move away from the path of the missles. When the lock is broken, the missles will still continue along the path they were going before they lost it.

3) Get close to those LRM boats if you can. If you get closer than 180m, their LRMs do nothing. If I'm in my Catapult-C1, the last thing I want is enemies at close range. 3 med lasers, TAG and LRM 15's are not what I want to be taking to a brawl.

4) If you have to cross into the open for any reason, KEEP MOVING TOWARD COVER! Don't stop and don't try to fight with anyone out there. The longer you're out there, the more LRMs that are going to hit you. You're not going to win any brawls with their teammate dumping a steel rain down on you. Take some lumps from their direct fire, tank some LRMs if you must, but get to cover. Let your enemies stumble around in the open and get trucked by your team's missles like a boss if they want to.
5) Die with good grace. Sometimes you have some bad luck or make a mistake and get wrecked by a long range pain train. It happens. Just keep in mind, those guys take their fair share of lumps as well. LRM boats are outright delicious. If I'm in my Jenner, I keep an eye out for missle trails from enemy mechs and try to get back to those juicy morsels. An A-1 sporting all LRMs!? Yum! Alternatively, if you prefer those c-bills, you could think of them as a pot of gold at the end of a smoky rainbow.

With five games in a row with unbalanced teams 6-7 or our team missing an ECM mech, I'm ready to run my splat cat with no remorse. The balance in this game is horrendously off, it's not even funny. I got 4 of my friends to start playing the game. 1 left because he just didn't like the playstyle and ttk of the game. No problem not every game is for everyone. The other 3 are on a temporary hiatus because of "wonky balance" Not every player has the patience to wait behind a fracking building/boulder every match they don't have an ecm on their team (Save one that actually covers the team with it). Sorry to burst all those "elitist" bubbles out there, but there is something wrong with both ECM and LRMs in this game. (SRM and SSRM boating too)

Great example of how LRMs are OP without an ECM bubble protecting you:

Playing on river city night: (just played this round a few minutes ago)
=>Start heading to upper city
=>Right before the ramp up to the upper city "Incomming missiles" warning (lower spawn)
=>64Km/h up that ramp (missiles coming from the enemy spawn LRM's have small distance to travel)
=>Right before I reach my building for cover my right arm is torn off and right torso and cockpit are already critical.
=> Take pot shots from cover and deal 500+ damage (2ERppc + 1 LLaser)
=> Killed crossing the shortest stretch of river I could find by LRM fire

The opposing team had 2 ECM equipped mechs their LRM boats at their spawn were covered by one of the bubbles the other was a commando that got a little too close to a gauss illya.

Aside from the commando and a stalker, the game was a complete stomp. With their LRMs we were effectively trapped in the upper city. Sorry, but I don't want to wait 10 minutes of a match confined to one tiny portion of the map. I can see how LRMs ARE A SUPPRESSION WEAPON, however they are currently the long range "I win button"

If a weapon system is OP in pug play, but not effective in 8 man groups (8v8) something is wrong.

Also to the tryhard neckbeard that says "Hurr durr your ELO is so low that you think LRMs are OP, go play some 8 mans you QQing looser!" Not every person has time to organize 8 friends to play with I maybe get 1 or 2 8-man matches in over the weekends. All my 8 mans are on TS3 and go something like this:

Me: Hey want to make an 8 man party?
Anon (1-8): Sure!

I am fully aware that tactics change when you have a more organized group, but for your average player like me who can only afford a few pug matches after work/college while the family is asleep (That means no TS3 kiddos)... The game is just... meh some rounds.

The whole reason why I run a CPLT-C4 with LRMs and TAG is to kill people with ECM. I have to admit it's the most fun I've had in a while. I kill RVN-3Ls, I kill AS7-D-DC (sometimes 3 a match). Just line of sight them, TAG them and light them up with missiles.

Of course if anyone gets close to me I'm screwed, there is literally nothing I can do but beg for help... amazingly though I think a lot of players shy away at getting close to me because they are afraid I'm a splatcat.

So for everyone out there complaining about ECM and Ravens and Atlas you see everywhere... run a Catapult full of LRMs and TAG, and have fun

But instead of mounting AMS I can just mount ECM which works as a no missile wall for the entire team?

Really why should I have to worry about all this "smart play" and tactics when I can just shut off all enemy missiles for the whole match for so little effort?

Dont trust ECM as a Shield.

Once you are TAGed you are screwed. I play most Times Misslebaot, ECM has forced me, from the longrange Indirect Fire Support Role, into the shortrange direct Fire Role. Shoting at 2-300m short behind my Teammates, with LOS and established TAG only. ECM dont helps vs Missles incoming.

It prevents only, vs being Targeted at the long Ranges, when you normaly would hae a change to get more as easy to cover. But this Days are over duo ECM.

In Days of ECM, play carefully, advance carefully. Always use Cover, and as soon as you get the Missle incoming, try to locate from where and gett into Cover Asap.

Use enemy mech as cover. get really close to that enemy Atlas, make sure it's between you and the missiles. and let's the friendly fire do its' job.

find the nearest friendly ECM coverage and dive into it.

if you are fast and got JJ, cut cross at 90 degree to the incoming missiles and hit the jump jet at the last second.

if you are running off a steep slope or cliff, shutdown while you are in the air, missile will track your last position, which you won't be. (if there's no slope or cliff handy, you can also shutdown in mid-jump to throw off the tracking.)

Lol, has seriously nobody noticed that there are certain exploits that can be done with, shall we say, certain modules and equipment *coughBAPcough* that make you completely invisible to TAG? I guess I really am the smarter player. Work smarter not harder!

In this game, no point.

Yep, absolutly no point, the point is to qq here - that what really helps fighting missiles.
The more people doesn't use the AMS - the merrier life of LRM boats. :D

No matter what I do, what mech I'm in, what map I'm on, I get "warning: missiles" every .02 seconds from all directions. No matter where I hide or how fast I go, I'm getting pelted by LRMs and spotted by unseen enemies.

Let's praise god PGI wouldn't implement new Bettys sounds like - "warning: PPCs, warning: LL, warning: machinegun"/
There'll be ten times more warnings? and what You'll do after - qq here course of "warnings"?

Dual AMS destroys 10 LRM's, so fighting a LRM60 stalker, that is 1/6th less damage. I run a LRM Armtemis 60 stalker and I took out a LRM 80 because I had 2 AMS and he did not run AMS.

Not to mention You're not alone and have 1-2-3 friends nearby with AMS also. And good AMS party can almost nullify any missile salvo.
Not to mention there's much more SRM stalkers then LRM and all other people spamming LRM-5-10-15 are almost useless against good AMS defence.

Just to be clear, I by no mean think that LRMs, ECM, TAG and all that are totally fine as they are. There's just a lot of people that suck down fiery frankfurters like they're in a hotdog eating contest without even taking basic avoidance measures and then rant in game about how OP LRMs are and curse out the people using them. If you're getting lit up from all directions, where exactly are you that this is happening? You've obviously rushed straight through the enemy lines and positioned yourself in clear line of sight of a bunch of enemy mechs. As for the match where you all ran up to upper city and got nailed by lrms...well that happens a lot when you're going that way. You also tend to take direct fire. If you went lower city, you have lots of buildings and cover for most of the way. If I'm piloting a faster mech, I try to go that route right away and harass whatever LRM boats and assaults are hanging out at there base. Missle boats lose interest in whatever is going on down range when they have a Jenner hitting them with SRMs.

Tell that you're under the magic missile proof umbrella to any TAGed LRM boat, see what he'll tell you.

I generally always try to have AMS on my mechs, unless I really need the weight/slots for some reason. Even if you don't particularly need it to protect yourself, it can possibly keep some damage off of your team, especially if they also have AMS. It can also be useful for judging what direction the incoming missles are coming from if you're preoccupied with a slugging match or something. At the very least, you can try to twist and take the damage on a less damaged part of your mech.

This is because the damned thing is bugged as hell.

For every enemy you once locked in as a target. If one of your team mates target's them while you have no line of sight you get a: "Warning Targeted". Also everytime a teammate launches his missiles on them you get a "Warning: Incoming Missiles". Whatever they did there went awfully wrong and it is annoying as hell. Most of the time I try to ignore the damn thing.

I've come across some mechs that I couldn't TAG already. As I was at over 300 or 400 meters from them, I chalked it up to something on the terrain that was blocking it that was invisible. A wall issue or something. Wasn't aware of a known bug like that with the mechs themselves. Good to know, thank you Team Leader!

My basic rules of thumb, which emerged after a few matches. I've never had problems with LRM boats, save for a few situations where they caught me in a brawl and I couldn't position myself.

1) Never stay 2-3 seconds away from cover. (Average LRM flight time is about 3-5 seconds)

2) If you are far away from cover, make sure you're fast enough so that Rule 1 applies.
