But I get so scared the doomsayers might be right, and this game might be bleeding to death behind the scenes, because I can now see what it COULD be.
But what I have noticed: There is a dear friend of mine, almost 40 and a passionate gamer:
He grew up with online gaming, it is his mainstay for recreation
BUT he likes camping. He is UTTERLY competitive and hates losing
His K/D stat is everything and then some to him
He is utterly impatient and loves the "quick fix"
I have tried to get him to play - no dice. I have to say I have not tried to sugarcoat MWO, without breaking it down.
IS that the typical young ish professional 90-s generation gamer that I assume is the 2nd wave of gamers?
That this game now needs?
The attention span of a midget on steroids, guys.
SO how do we get guys like this to play and stay?

Sorry, that would be a stupid idea.
I don't know that what's your problem with the maps of MWO (except that there too few) but I found them well crafted. Different terrain, lots of buildings, dropships, ships, hills etc...
Ok Alpine is a a little bit empty but they couldn't fill such a huge map with a lot of buildings without making the game unplayable for the gamers with old PC's.
Obviously there would have to be some sort of QC on the community made maps, however I think it's far from a stupid idea. It takes a seemingly large burden off PGI since it takes them almost 3 months to get a map out the door. It keeps us in fresh map content at little cost or time to PGI.

Not everyone from that "second wave" is going to be like that. Any given game will have it's share of players who come in, play some, and leave right after. The issue here is getting more players in the pipe. Even assuming a 30% retention rate, PGI will be getting a lot more if they can reach 1000 potential players than just 500.
People like the person you mentioned probably won't stay around. They're not likely to stay around in most F2P games either. The trick isn't to try and sugarcoat MWO as much as possible for him, it's to get the interest of the next guy in line who may have heard about the game in passing but doesn't know enough about it or doesn't have the incentive (read: doesn't want to grind 25 games for his first 'Mech) to find out it's enjoyable to him. Promotional stuff lowers the barrier to entry, and that's what PGI should be focusing on to get new players. The Cadet bonus lowered that barrier, but it's still not nearly enough.

"Community Moderator" is not very comparable to a Community Manager...
MWO will be at PAX, and GDC, I haven't heard anything beyond those two, yet, for the year.
edit: cleaned up my wording some, so it didn't sound as antagonistic.

So? Considering what I put up with as a Moderator (for a major company, not just policing some little fan forum), I can only imagine the level of stress the guy above me had to put up with on a daily basis. It's why I typically give Garth a free pass on most things. Paul and the others? Fair game.

Because most people give one game one chance.

And how many of those wouldn't have played at all otherwise? Can you say for certain? For every one who leaves, how many stay, who otherwise would've never known?
Understand this - my whole point with this thread is that if we keep ignoring pressing issues because we're waiting for community warfare, we'll never get there. PGI needs to buckle down, fix the game they have now rather than working on something that they might never be able to afford to make, and start getting people in NOW, on the core gameplay once they've fixed the most pressing issues. If/when CW finally hits, it'll be all the sweeter for it.

I have had this feeling too. However, that will be all subject to change IF PGI/IGP handle the "Clan" factions well in the communitys eyes.
I'm dissappointed I've not seen "updates" spread across house forums in the form of "important names" from each faction, on what is happening. No teasers across facebook which is an incredible medium for media IMO. Nothing.

Next PR push will probably be CW. The game is still very unfinished.
