Having said that I am pretty sure it make me a more visible target when I'm pugging, particularly in My Awesomes which is basically vetical stripes in it's base pattern.

I did that too, back in the day. Good times. Too old now, though, my body can't handle the abuse (and the ridiculous amounts of mead consumption that went along with it).
More on topic, it's true. Given a group of otherwise similar mechs without glaring vulnerabilities, I'll pick the most visually outstanding one as my primary target because in these days of ECM and no reliable target locks, they're the easiest to visually identify in a furball.

Can't remember how many times I've called out in teamspeak using color ID instead of a target letter ID. "Shoot the purple Raven! SHOOT THE PURPLE RAVEN!!!!!"

a )stock
b ) changing it won't help you ingame
c ) it costs a lot of C-Bills/MC's
d ) you can't see it yourself ingame ;-)
Even the Cbil cost for cammo is out of line. Probably why you are seeing a lot of stock. I know I won't buy any cammo or paint with either MC or Cbills....and I am a guy that spent money on this game to boot.

It's House Kurita colors
Catapult-K2 looks awesome in those colors
To make it easy for my team to tell my Mech from the rest. Since, most use the defult color. If thier IFF is disrupted and they still can't tell me apart from the enemy. They have bigger problems then ECM. They never noticed who was on the team to begin with.
Biggest reason many don't change thier colors. It costs money for little differance.

TL;DR: People don't see a point in spending money on those things yet, and rightfully so. New, improved and expanded features coming soon! (For example: You choose your house... you get a scheme and paint job, and that only continues from there, trust me, that may not be exactly how it works but that's the bait on the hook.)
Oh yeah, I was watching some science show the other night... they were talking about the importance of co-operation and also competition... those are two of things that are getting a major overhaul very soon, just for example. (yes, both those things play into whether or not you will paint your 'mech, not to mention the starter packages are basically free, I'm certain you can attain advanced versions through achievements and rank, or even purchase.. oh, someone, stop me from dreaming.... /SLAP)

Perhaps we would even be able to set certain camera angles and positions/movements at certain time intervals so we could make truly epic video's showing off both our shinies and piloting skills.
One is allowed to have dreams, right?
TT Beagle Active Probe apparently has memory built-in to record battles.
It's up to PGI to decide with to do with that.

The "free" CBill colours are terrible and cost too much. I'd rather put theose CBills towards a new module or mech.
The MC options are various prices, ranging from expensive to ludicrous.
Pretty much this. Right now I'm saving for the new Rifleman, er, Jaegermech (x3). I'd much rather put the c-bills towards upgrades and functional customizations. Maybe when I'm done buying mechs for a while then I can start adding some colors. I'd like to eventually get a distinct color scheme so when I'm ecm'd out my team will know which mech to shoot (preferrably not me!)

It probably has a half ton hard disk for it.

1) Cheat. I wont invest much money into colors or patterns. I have a few unlocked, a few from promotions and the basics. That has to suffice.
2) A nice but subtle color / pattern. Understatement is how I roll.
I think I'd invest considerably more if prices were lower. But that's something PGI has to figure out. Better sales over numbers or better sales over prices...
