Do I see it in game? No.
Do I love it when people tell me my Black and Marik Purple Stalker looks like its velvet painting?
....Hell yes I do!

Have not really thought of it.
The ideas I do have well, kinda stand out: Purple, lime green and Red.
Then which colors are just C-bill and what is MC?
Maybe a series of gray's, or browns, tans and greens.

I think when people see two equal mechs, one custom painted, one stock, most are going to start shooting on the custom painted one. I choose to stick with the noob look for now...

Aside from being mostly cosmetic (which I like. i like the game, I like my mechs, and therefore I buy colors and camo), Colors (even the brighter ones) can change the silhouette of your mech. Especially with the new Mountain Line camo, I can significantly change the perceptable silhouette of my mech (make it bigger/smaller, emphasize certain parts). This can in fact give you the few milliseconds you need when targeted w/o FLIR. As soon as FLIR comes into play, it all goes to hell for sure, but it COULD help you in certain situations. Still waiting for the map-specific camo presets, which could give the whole thing another twist.

That's why I avoid camos or patterns that highlight my mech's head ;-)

The default pattern is pretty bad for most mechs, and aside from PC Gamer and Phranken the patterns all replicate real-life camo schemes which generally don't look good in bright flashy colors. If you're just going to make something camo may as well stick with default green which works well enough.
If the patterns were more gundam-like we'd probably see people going for flashier stuff.

dazzle and urban block both look great with bright colors
