Online at any given time? Who knows. Anywhere between 2.5k and 20k would be my guess.

And if 90% of players opted in that would be about 8300 players. What's your point?

Under the week, at european afternoon, I can play 5 matches and have the same guys in my games again and again.
At the weekend, at european afternoon, I can play 50 matches and not see the same name again.

Xfire shows that atm MWO is in stable waters with a slight positive trend though the volatility has increased too.
It depends all on doing the right moves now to make it grow further.

If that were an actual valid reason, no Dev anywhere would EVER comment on player numbers.
And no dev does, unless the player numbers are wildly exceeding both theirs and the gaming public's numbers.
If MWO had a million subs, I'm sure they'd tell everyone about it. If it had ten million, they'd never shut up about it. But having a healthy 100-250,000 population? No way they'd get anything but grief from talking about that. People are all too happy to assume that anything less than WoT numbers means the game is "dying".
Please not the word "healthy" in the above sentence.

Fixed that for you.
And that's my point, you don't release info by taking into account the wildest and most exaggerated reactions.
As to your other point, there are plenty of Devs and Publishers who will trumpet even decent numbers. There is however no one who wants to make public bad numbers.
