Elo? Its an interesting and somwhat helpful concept in a business sense. Elo normalizes player skill thereby decreasing skill rate (drags out more games to get better). Decentralizes veterans from roflstomping new people.
Ive seen and participated in a few skill matchers, from fps to rts. The best skill system ive seen is Starcraft II's system.
A weighted assumption of skill based on dynamic factors like damage to kill ratio's. Modifiable hit percents. Inclusive of damage recieved.

A BROAD sense of skill boils to,..
Aiming
*placing shots where you want them, IE (ct/weapon vulnerability)
AND
Manuevering/Tactics
*Back armor damage, cockpit damage, 1's own damage taken, 1's own damage spread
IE (shoot em in the back, loose all your other armor before your ct)

The Elo levels should also be weighted somthing like 6 tiers in percents.
IE 5,15,50,15,10,5 ranked in percentage lowest to highest.

I also think there should be a *Casual* mode where stats aren't tracked, for those times you wanna bring a 9 flamer HB into an assualt :D. New players would benefit alot from this.

PS: The casual bit shouldent be too hard from a theoretical standpoint. I mean copy paste standard game code, comment out the "//save to server". The hard part should be slapping a new button on the main menu :/.

I don't think it is working.

My W/L record is no where near 50/50 since Elo. It's more like 75/25. :D

Why does a matchmaking system have to dictate a 50% win percentage? I am not a 50% win percentage person. This should not be forced upon me when I pug. When I literally have to kill half the enemy team so that my side has a chance at winning, well that is not fun.
If I take any mechs that are less then optimal then my team suffers, gawd forbid I have to level a mech from scratch. It is almost unbearable. Snowflake build? Yea right, my team gets annihilated and I get ridiculed.
I am at a point that I want to lose every match just so I can have fun again. Stop trying to make everyone win 1/2 their matches. Some people are better then others, that is just how it is. Otherwise u just force people to game the system and further unbalance a horrid system.

I had to do that most of the time pre Elo due to the amount of noobs on the field anyway lol.

Exactly, some people are better than others. Some just don't like the idea it's them that are getting out classed and want to play scrubs all the time for easy street wins. lol

So u agree. If I am a scrub I should lose 80 percent of my matches and not get easy wins. If I am pro I should win 80 percent of my matches and lose 20. Otherwise u have no clue about what u want to say.

More like: If Elo was working properly, you should be playing both with and against people of roughly equal skill to yourself.
You should not play against newbs, and you should not be teamed with them either.

It's not working quite properly for me yet, in that I am still quite regularly topping the scoreboards in my games. This being said, it's much better than before Elo was implemented.

Again, people are not equal. Why should your W/l be predetermined? Why should you have to be all serious every drop or otherwise be a detriment to your team. I don't want to be pigeon hold. Who does. Who wants a 50.50 win percentage that is undeserved? That is actually contrary to fair and not fun.

Nobody likes losing.
If you win 80%, someone out there only wins 20% to counterbalance.
That person quits.
Now win/lose isn't the whole name of the game either, why does it matter if you only win half the games, if you have fun playing. If the matches are challenging, then you can lose and still have a good time.
It's a multiplayer game, you can't win all the time like in single player.

interesting

Half say tonnage should take priority, other half says ELO is good as is...

not sure what this means

Great poll, I hope the thread does not turn into a wailing wall of people missing out on stomping beginners. Elo is definitely making the game more competitive for me, and I'm starting to recognize people who are in my " bracket".
Two main concerns:
1. Weak tonnage matching
2. Weak intra team matching

It means that Elo, as a system, is a good system to have, but a bunch of people (myself included) don't understand why PGI allowed tonnage imbalance to come into it.

You're silly :D . If you are actually skilled, then you should want to face skilled people, right? Because if you're actually good at the game, then beating up noobs all day shouldn't really give you much of a thrill.

If, on the other hand, you're just so desperate for validation that you'll take it by dropping against people playing their very first few matches, then you have other problems, my friend, and playing MWO isn't going to help.

A 50-50 matchmaker is the only way to make the game fun, fair, and challenging for everyone who is playing. Any game that has a measuring stick labeled "Must be this good to enjoy the game" is not a good game.

You should only win that many if you are a Pro playing against scrubs.

I'm saying you are the scrub if all you want to lower your Elo so that you play scrubs all the time for those EASY wins.

Considering I see it often enough 7vs7, 8vs4, 7vs3, 6vs6 and so on I don't think it's working as intended really. IMO the missing tonnage matching is the worst part of it really, especially since in pug matches people will likely get frustrated that way - mostly newer players.

The matchmaker's goal is not to give you a 50:50 win / loss ratio. Its only objective is to TRY to match you against opponents that are similarly rated. You reach a 50:50 win / loss ratio when you have plateaued and can no longer consistently win against the opponents you are matched with.

Obviously if you are achieving a better than 50:50 win / loss and can maintain this, you are one of the best players in the game currently. The converse similarly applies in the opposite direction.

Having said that, the matchmaking parameters DO need to be tuned and some changes need to be made e.g. brackets. It is painful to watch someone who doesn't even know how to pilot a mech put in the same match with people who've been playing for months.

If they can implement brackets without causing unduly long waiting times, then the next thing PGI should tweak is the tonnage / class disparities in matchmaking.

So... you want to lose every match for a while, in order to lower your Elo, so you can go back to stomping newbies? And that's fun to you? Very sporting.

You can game the system by losing, and your Elo will go down, and then you'll win for a while, and it'll go up, and you'll be right back to where you started. Makes more sense to just play your best every time and maybe improve enough to actually compete at your current Elo.

Some people are better than others, indeed, that's true. They get an Elo that reflects that and then they face actual competition. For the "good players" who don't want that, most single player games have a "beginner" difficulty setting, and that should net you the easy wins you're looking for.

Pretty much this.

Use ELO to group players of like skill if possible and get this "the matchmaker says you should lose" crap out.

Oh and I didn't vote because your last option rather sucks, there should be a none of the above in there.
