MG do almost nothing for damage, and cause light mechs which rely on ballistic hard points to be relatively ineffective. The recent crit seeking mechanic for machine guns is interesting, but not really useful until it is possible to crit the engine and kill enemy mechs is introduced. In respect for the Devs to have a weapon to use with this new crit mechanic, I'd like to propose a new light ballistic weapon. This weapon is basically a scaled down gauss - moderate damage, low heat, moderate range.

This weapon is based on the Mag Shot Gauss Rifle

0.5 Tons (0.25 ton clan version)
2.5 Damage
0.25 heat
270m range
810m max
1 slot weapon, 1 slot ammo
1500mps speed
60 ammo/ton
- 150 damage per ton
- non explosive slugs
- available in 1 and 1/2 ton increments, but both take 1 full slot
0.050 impulse
1 sec cooldown (2.5 dps, all other ballistics are 4 dps)
3 health
5 points damage if destroyed (50% chance)

Entire mech platforms rely on light ballistics, and the current choices are less then ideal given the current game mechanics. Come on Devs - give us light pilots some ballistic love!

i would say give it 1 ton weight, increase damage to 3 and 50 shots per ton and give it a health of 6, would be easier to focus the damage a bit better wich is good for fast mechs.

That could work. The additional 1/2 ton for the weapon might hurt light mechs with 4 hardpoints though. maybe keep it at 1/2 ton, but it costs 2 slots? That would affect boating.

hm. Mag Shot development will come... but actually the IS is hardly able to use the "standard" Gauss Rifle.

There is a wide variaty of Infantry support weapon that should be mount onto mechs.
However...just make MGs usefull - as they are and in arrays... or a 1sec burst fire mode with 1000% more damage for each bullet

Unfortunately the devs say that MG are fine and Totally Balancedtm as stated in the NGNG podcast, we need another weapon to fill the rift. I want my MG's to not suck, but I want my 5K to have a reason to take up a 300MC garage space more.

With 0.5 t, the 5K could mount 4 of them, resulting in devastating 10 DPS (4*.25 hps = 1 hps, engine provides 0.2 hps*10 = 2.0 hps).

They said ECM was balanced too a while back. Oh how wrong they were.

Remember the Devs test these things in their little non-competitive internal groups, so if a Dev states something is 'balanced' on NGNG's propaganda channel, I don't take it too seriously. I've seen Devs try and use "lol MG is balanced you fools" in games, and they die fast.

Balanced by 150 points of damage per ton of ammo, and the DPS of boating 4 of anything should look scary. Still the smallest ballistic (besides MG, lol) for DPS.

Armor tweaked, but next to max.

Possible 5K loadout:
  • 4 Mag Shot Gauss Rifles (2 t) + 4 t ammo (600 dmg)
  • MPL (2 t)
  • 5 JJ (2.5 t)
  • endo
  • XL255
  • total payload: 10.5 t (w/o engine)
  • hps: 4*0.25 + 1.33 = 2.33 (engine DHS provide 2.0 hps dissipation + modifiers)
  • dps: 4*2.5 + 1.6 = 11.6
3L dps: 2*1.43 + 3*1.25 = 6.61, hps: 2*0.57 + 3*1 = 4.28

That's why I'm concerned.

Boost MG damage, should be reasonable DPS, 0.8 to 1.6, plus could retain crit seeking, lower ammo count possibly.

FIFY. Also the 3l will have 3.75 DPS after streaks run out, while the spider will have 1.6 DPS. Besides the Raven has WAY more DPS due to the splash bug, and SSRMS always hit after lock. This is an aimed weapon, so effective DPS will be less then potential DPS for a moderately skilled pilot. Not a good comparison, especially since the laser Jenner is close to the Mag Gauss Spider for DPS, but the ammo doesn't run out.

Ballistics are FINE, it's the hard point system that needs to be replace with something more intuitive.

There is already a 'Mech-size Magshot, but it isn't introduced until 3072. http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Magshot 1 heat, 2 damage, 270m range, 0.5 tons, 2 critical slots, 50 ammo per ton. Or did you base your proposed weapon's stats off of the 'Mech-sized one already, and just linked to the other page?

In MW:O, machine gun ammo isn't available in half-ton lots. Why should the Magshot's be?
