Today, I have decided to challenge myself and play MWO without my usual crutches. I will sell my beloved Atlas D-DC and go back to my founder's D. I will no longer use an ECM on any of my mechs, I will not use Streak SRMs and I will not use more than two SRM launchers on any of my mechs that are capable of carrying SRMS. I gave up on lights some time ago, so that will not be an issue.

Yes, I will probably be destroyed more often than not and there will be many games where I will not break 100 damage. I will be endlessly taunted (but that is no big deal, since I taunt and get taunted regularly :(). So, even though I will not get as many kills and my K/D ratio will tank, I will know that every kill I earn will either be due to luck, or pure skill.

Anyone else who already challenges themselves in this way, or wants to try are welcome to comment. Anyone who does not care, or has any other opinion on this is welcome to comment as well. I will see many of you in-game, as enemies and allies, so play well!

Good luck. I run hero mechs most of the time.

See, my w/l and k/d is much, MUCH better in my 4SP than my Com-2A (both elited and both kitted out pretty tight.) I don't think a k/d just over 1.5 is super duper, but ECM and Streaks certainly haven't been a Win Button for me.

Kudos to you...and just tell everyone it was pure skill ;)

first off, i applaud you for admitting that mass SRMs, Steaks and ECM are all crutch weapons or equipment, these things as they are able to be used now is what has gotten most of those in the upper reaches of the ELO rankings where they are now. Not because of skill but as you have pointed out, as a crutch or the easy button (in my words). Good luck to you on your new path. You are right, you will die more and not climb the ranks as fast or as easy but in the end, youll probably feel better knowing that what you do achieve after giving up your easy button weapons and equipment will all be because you achieved it with SKILL.

What about the ECM spider.. does that even count as a crutch for the spider? I think its lack of hardpoints offset the ECM-cheese-factor on this mech.

I have tried to avoid the cheese mechs as much as possible. For me, getting competitive at this stage in game development would burn me out, so I try to avoid cheese builds... for now. :(

When I play I just have a goal of 10dmg per ton of mech I'm in. If I can do that, I'm one happy Lyran.

Kudos!

I never run streaks and don't own a mech that can carry ECM. Even though I found my SRM/ML Stalker to be quite effective, I rarely play it. Most often I'm in my Flame, then a CTF-3D (before they were cool :(), or one of my Trebs. Occasionally I'll take out the Jenner for kicks, since my rating in lights is so low I still get 3 or 4 kills in it. My favorite is the Flame, if I get 2 kills I'm ecstatic! Just got 4 in a match tonight, woohoo!

Oh and my K/D has yet to reach 1.0, it's holding steady at .97 with over 1000 kills so gonna take a lot to move it. I could care less, kills are meaningless. I play for the challenge and joy of tweaking my mechs.

Try running Spiders. I've been doing it for the past week to spice things up and it's been a blast. ****** little mechs, you'll get blown up plenty and feel like a champ when you do well. Fun for a challenge.

In the same vein as this I've never brought myself to purchase a 3L and run the typical Craven build that has been out in abundance for the past 3 months. I run streaks on one mech, that being a hero mech, and run the Atlas RS three times as often as my DDC.

Go lone wolf with non-ecm lights, and take SSRMs if you can.

I do it a lot in my X5. K/D and win loss are exactly 1.0 but its a ton of fun. Played plenty of randoms in it on my own.

If you want to have fun with a Stalker you could try this:

3F

(Should work on the others as well though)

2 ERPPCs
1 LL
1 LRM15 (2 tons ammo)
2 SRM4s (2 tons ammo)
Full armor everywhere but legs, you can strip 8 points from each leg.
20 DHS

It is more effective than you might think

(i run it with 3 SRM4s or 3 SSRM2s, but I adjusted it per your specifications)

i do this from the begininng its nice :( now i did the spider jumping madness
somehow by the time i finish unlocking master in the worst varient. i find the way to build them fight and drive them in an extremly dangerous way and they become my favorite. it realy force me to change strategy and un usual loadouts but the right match can really work sitting in a cheezz its boring afterward so i would sugest doing it as last resort its amazzingly frustrating but then fun

thats how the 3c cicada become my favorite its so mutch fun
but b ready to buy lot and lot diferent engines and wepons so u can experiment

i have briefly tried almost all the current popular builds back when this game was in CBT and i must say it was only fun for a little while. but after each reset i always went back to my centurions and now im working with dragons and brawler phracts. i used to get stomped and barely do anything in a match but i learned how to pilot better and work together with my team of pugs. honestly, i find it a lot more fun cos i love the challenge it brings and the satisfaction in placing top or near top of the scoreboard is just so rewarding. ;) so to OP cheers! :(

I've never used and ECM mech yet and hadn't planned to. I have used a splatcat though and felt dirty, but you have to be good to use them effectively
