Punk Oblivion - If you still read this thread, I apologise for being a naysayer. Your "AC-6" idea intrigued me for a long time, and as soon I was able to get the dough together I built this beastie:

AC-2s on left mouse

UltraAC-5 on right

Hold left mouse button to spray AC2, and tap right mouse on every second dakka (keeps in a rhythm where the ultra wont jam).

It's ludicrous. This guy is always the star of the show, usually around 500+ damage and often 3+ kills.

In my opinion there are only 3 builds who make a lot of dmg if played right:

AC 40
Twin Gauss
4 UAC

with

XL Engine 250 - slow but gives you a lot of tonnage for enough ammunition

I believe that in the hands of a skilled pilot with a supporting team, nearly any reasonable build can be high damage.

AC/40 is a proven winner, and I run an XL280 in my AC/40 JM6-S with 7 tons of ammo. It has a short effective range, but the burst is quite high, coming in at 40 damage per alpha, and 10.5 DPS. This build is great for stripping armor, cinching kills, and one-hit legging.

Dual GAUSS has nearly the same potent burst as AC/40, but with a far superior effective range. You will also never overheat when Alpha striking with dual GAUSS, and the only thing you trade-off is snapshots and a couple tons. Smurfy doesn't take the new GAUSS charge time into account when calculating DPS, so actual DPS with dual GAUSS is 6.58 rather than 7.5.

Quad UAC/5 is a build I'm not very fond of for Jagers. It's too heavy with too little real-world DPS. One can try to justify the rapid firing rate of UAC/5, but the jam rate (20% now) is still way too high to make this an all-time effective sustained DPS build. If two cannons jam at the same time during rapid fire, then Quad AC/2 is actually putting out more DPS. You can't brawl effectively with Quad UAC/5 because of the severe lack of armor required to carry enough ammunition (even with Endo-Steel and XL250). The only place for this build is long-range support, and only if you get super lucky with rapid-fire jams.

So whats the general consensus regarding putting XL engines in a Jager? Good or bad idea?

Generally a good idea assuming you know what you're doing. The Jager has huge side torsos which hide the CT fairly well, you give up a lot of survivability when using the XL. However, as basically every Jager build is packing multiple heavy ballistic weapons, the mobility gained from the XL more than outweighs the side torso vulnerability in most people's minds. The alternative is to run something like a STD200 and to crawl along until something fast rips you apart.

Just be aware that unlike a mech like the Catapult (for which the XL is a no-brainer as it barely loses any survivability to carry it), there is a big trade off for using an XL in a Jager. It's just almost always worth it.

It's the high placement of the arms and the 50/50 hardpoint placement that does it. The Jager would be considered awful if it had all its weapons shifted to one side and toward the vertical middle, but still kept its profile. As it is, the height and obvious weakspots are very much offset by the weapons layout. Which greatly favors the sharp tactical minds, and the plain ***** gun nuts like myself.

The Jager can make a zombie, but it's not an effective one. Since the moment you lose a side torso you also lose an arm, and you don't have any center torso weapons at all. Still, with a 280 standard engine and watching your damage indicator carefully all the time you might be able to absorb enough damage to come out of a brawl alive, and considering you can still cram LB10-Xes and machineguns or dual AC/2s on...

Oh yeah the uniform mech. Its pretty effective. But imo it is very boring too. Sometimes it feels like everybody use this thing.

use the darn hardpoints on a mech! :)

Just a 4 Ballistic maximum build on most jagger mechs builds is no fun ;)

heck dual ac 20 firebrands are very common but you dont see many people using all 6 energy hardpoints or the speed boost it has
Just taking advantage of the 2 medium lasers on the arms lol

Anyway Dual ac 10's , 2 ac 5's with lasers and 3 ac 5 's might not seem like much but they surely do hurt and work well

JM-6A got 2 balistics,JM-6S 4 and the JM-6DD got 6. My current favorite is the JM6-DD with all weapon slots in use.
The Firebrand i never used it yet,but i think it is more energy focused. I dont know why so many people build it up as a uniform mech.

The FB works great as an energy boat. XL340 with 2 LL, 4ML, AMS and 21 DHS. You can do almost the same build with a STD300 for a bit less speed and more sturdiness. Either way, very nice. You can also swap the LLs for PPCs, although I don't like the heat on that build.

I haven't tried AC/40 yet, for fear of being cheesy. But I think I'm gonna give it a whirl just for kicks.

Other builds that I like on the DD and/or S...

Dual AC/10s or LB10s with MGs and MLs
Dual AC/5s with LLs

I've run 3 set ups with my DD:

AC/20 x2

AC/10 x2 w/ x4MG

x6 MG w/ x2 LRG Pulse

I have done consistently more damage with the x6 MG setup much to my surprise.

I was running LPLs on that build but I have switched to ER PPCs, if you don't mind running an XL you can shoehorn 20 DHS into it and keep cooling eff. around 40%. Whenever things get hot just lay off the PPCs. The LPLs high rate of fire makes the heat stay right around where the ER PPCs put you anyway, the burst and the range is a big plus for me. If you get two of those 6MG DDs together it's a murder-fest.

Here's a fun one what I'm currently using as a sort of back-line guardian: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...e2a847620acf4f8. It's got a couple of major problems, namely torso twist speed and general mobility, but that is easily remedied by scrapping the AMS and ammo for a bigger engine. And if you don't have Tweak on the Jager yet you're doing it wrong. Also, while it isn't armored like a solid slab, that isn't what Jagers are for, and thanks to the dual LB10-X:es you've got enough of a punch that you can just dive into most melees from the side and give them hell while your teammates take the fire. So while your range is rather limited, it's not like you can't be effective in multiple ways during the course of a battle.

Non negotiable. Always use an XL, just make sure you don't get reckless with how you move. Try to avoid charging in first into a melee since you will die first. Jagers are awesome ambushers and great point defenders when shooting from cover. Use that to your advantage.

I've had some great matches using 4 ac2's and a couple mL's.
One version with a XL235 11DHS and 735 rounds of ammo (not enough).

Tried it with a larger engine and 3 ac2's. Doesn't work the same... Either not enough ammo and not quite enough punch. Of course, anything can work, I'm just a crummy pilot.

Firebrand build I try to go with the XL340 whenever possible.
2UAC5 and 5mL or an ERLL.
