Haven't been in this discussion for quite a while. I am happy about the planned details that Bryan and Paul posted (locked to torso, no free look, reduced HUD elements, zoom in when approaching cover) as they will negate any potential advantage of 3rd over 1st person and thus negate the necessity for a player base split over perspective.
Hold on there. If you are referring to what was posted in the Original Post, don't get too happy just yet...

One poster mentioned something that I thought was more than fair. List
some of the ideas we've been toying with in order for it to work. These are just SOME of the ideas we've been discussing:
- Camera is locked horizontally to the torso. This is not a peek around corners mode.
- Camera is locked vertically to the torso, you can only look up and down as far as your torso can.
- When approaching cover (to rocks/building etc), the camera pulls IN so FoV is greatly reduced when standing close to something.
- 3rd Person is not a free-cam.
- HUD will be significantly reduced if not completely removed.
- LOS targetting is NOT affected by 3rd person. If you cannot target it from 1st person, you cannot target it in 3rd.
- ONLY the targeted enemy (Press R) can be identified in 3rd person... all other HUD indicators are turned off.
Again, these are a few of the ideas we're working on. Please keep that in mind when posting.
That's a big difference from "planned details". The fact is, at this point, we still don't know what they are going to do, or how well it will work for mixed POV. I don't bring this up to slam Jason Parker. We just need to avoid things getting represented incorrectly, as other people see the latter post(s) and then run with that belief.
I still maintain that if PGI wants to bring 3PV into Community Warfare, then they need to give the 3PV'ers their own CW universe. Give them their own EOL too.
I'm far less concerned about the player base being "split", than about the fairness and substance of play. The NBT league worked just fine on 1PV only play, and I see no reason to suspect that a 1PV CW universe would have too few players here either. PGI seems to think that 3PV is going to bring in a grunch of players, so the 3PV CW should be able to stand on its own, too.
Even if PGI manages to handicap the 3PV mode sufficiently to negate that mode having an overwhelming advantage (which hardly seems like that is going to fly too well with many of the advocates of 3PV that I've seen in the forums), it will still alter the substance of play. If 1PV players are not able to totally avoid ever having to play against 3PV players, I doubt that this game will continue to hold enough interest for me to spend any more dollars on it.
