ETA: Another way to balance: perhaps force a choice between having 3pv or minimap? Sort of like thechoice bbetween pay coolant and free coolant?

That's pretty much how it is now. You'd be silly to try and actually shoot in 3PV the way it's implemented right now.

Now some time ago, I used to play a game called Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear. The game was basically a shooter. Online the most common tactics were to sit in third person behind say a corner, then step out to attack (often holding down a Center aim button) as you see them.
With the way MWO is currently, with hill humping for example I can see the very same sort of tactic (third person view ambush) becoming the norm (more so).
Is this a bad thing? is the hard question, personally, it is a big turn off to me.
Should it end up that I need to join third person view to even get a game, then I think I am done sadly.
One suggestion, maybe make the "hardcore" (aka first person only) mode reward you more than the "normal" mode. Same goes for CW, it needs to be made clear that the "harder" mode is what you should be doing, in my opinion at least.
Also as new mechs are added, just keep an eye on how it's "fixed" as I'd assume it to be hard to balance the view when all mechs turn differently and are of differing height. As that sort of thing may well become a big part of the meta going forward.

Tabrias07 and Jakucha posted these in the Public test thread and this is exactly the reason 3PV should not be making it into the game.
You create a massive tactical advantage to those that swap between 3PV and 1PV, no more getting ambushed by going over a hill or around a corner when the 3PV gives it away. You also have a wider field of view making it easier to track mechs that are in CQB with you as illustrated here
If the Blackjack was an enemy you wouldn't of known it was there on your left nor the k2 was on your right under normal circumstances but using 3pv you know where enemies are.
You also create even further segregation of the community, we already get broken down by elo and game type selection. Now you want to toss 3PV and 1PV into the equation. As I said in the prior thread I already fight the same people often enough due to ELO restrictions that I know when I do assault onl,y 1pv only my pool of players is going to shrink even further.
If your deadset on adding this to the game make it training grounds only, tutorial only so people can learn to drive and get to look at their mechs without increasing queue times even further and putting another massive tactical advantage to the game.
Edit: Also in these screen shots the players aren't using a different Field of view number as the guys from NGNG where when playing during the stream today. They had an even wider FOV to their sides due to the changed value

Anyone left just get out now while you can. Don't let yourself get hurt or disappointed anymore. Hope is the first step on the path of disappointment.

Don't suppose a refund would be possible? Maybe I could find someone to buy my account, I still have all 20,000 MC.
Oh I just realized, it would be like I'm PGI, I'm lying to people for their money with something I said that would be fun.

75% reduction and they have to play in a queue that says "Beginner mode" and are not able to take part in community warfare if we ever get it. After all, 3rd person is for those that cannot understand torso twist according to PGI.

So, in a 3PV gameplay mode that is supposed to help new players figure out how their mechs are oriented while not giving a significant advantage, you get a significant advantage (by being able to see a great deal more than you would inside the cockpit), while not being able to get a fix on your 'mechs orientation (because you can't even see your legs). Nice job guys. Can we scrap this idea yet?

Agreed... the only advantage to having 3PV in my mind was to help new players in the training grounds... but it apparently doesn't even do that since you can't see the mech's legs.
So, what we have now is a mode that allows you to see over objects, and a mode that is going to cause another community split. So we are splitting this already small community by: EU/US servers, 1PV/3PV, 4-mans/12-mans and ELO is implemented...

Here is my recording of yesterdays preview of the third person view on the test server.
Personally I thought that aiming was severely impaired and I shot rocks more than anything else and really everybody could see where you are because of that giant blinking red drone. I also thought that my situational awareness was severely hampered because I had no minimap.
