What do you think when you hear "dragon"? Giant, fire-breathing, monster that can fly; Right? So how is it that the Dragon 'mech doesn't normally have flamers and can not mount JJs?

Not too mention that dragons are traditionally loners that prefer ambush tactics, which is the opposite of the Dragon 'mech which works best in groups slowly wearing down targets.

the only thing that makes the Dragon slightly deserving of its name is the fact that it has a "snout"

I think I would rather call it a Dog: barking at you from far away then running when you get close

FYI the Dragon is one of my favorite 'mechs

It kinda looks like a dragon head. But complaining about the name is useless. ;)

By that thought process, the Warhammer is missing its sledge, and the Wolverine needs retractable claws...

Its called the Dragon because it was designed and biult by the Draconis Combine and was the first new mech chassis they had developed in a long while. A symbol of pride for the people of the Combine.

I would actually say the Warhammer has the most misleading name. Warhammer - get in close and smash anything in your way to a pulp. Warhammer 'Mech - get in close and you're screwed.

I was always under the impression it was named Dragon because the Draconis combine originally fielded the mech.

Edit: to above, the Draconis Combine did NOT design the dragon, it was originally designed to replace the shadow hawk, but the sldf turned it down. The DC then adopted the design and began production.

This is a great point. Cause the Vulture looks like a Vulture, the Loki looks like the Norse God of Mischief and there's no denying that the Atlas look like a 100t book of maps.

It actually does remind me of a vulture; not to mention it is most adept at "vulturing" other people's kills.

Actually, the Vulture does kinda look like a vulture, that's why the Inner Sphere called it that. The Clans called it a Mad Dog (fearsome name).

As for the Loki, it was named because it was always tagging along with the Thor. So named because it shot LRMs and a PPC at you (more the PPC).

Though Hellbringer and Summoner are better names.

Also, you are speaking from a western culture version of a dragon. Various cultures have different myths and stories about dragons or draconic enteties. Just because they one YOU are familiar with flies and breathes fire does not mean that it is the same for everyone.

As to the 'fire breathing', weapons of any type are methods of destruction. Just like fiery breath. So there is your fire breath.
